After leaving two sleeping beauties in his bed, new face Dr. Simon Brinner quickly turns on the charm with the ER staff. While waiting outside for a trauma patient to arrive, Tony and Sam have an awkward moment as she apologizes for kissing him. A heart patient, Mia, has stopped breathing and is rushed into the ER by her boyfriend. While Pratt plans an aggressive approach to her treatment, Dr. Brinner steps in and uses a more subtle method, which surprisingly works; Mia comes to.

At home Abby prepares for her flight to see Luca in Croatia. Sitting alone, she recalls a time before he left, when they were still together. She's not sure how things will turn out. Laverne, a fourth-year student, is assigned to Dr. Brinner in a trauma room. Meanwhile, Morris is in search of a test subject for his research, but Frank and Sam both turn him down. He wants to pay someone $100 to be tasered for his medical study.

As Tony takes Mia to have a biopsy on her heart, her boyfriend Jordan waits in the ER. Tony senses something is off between Mia and Jordan, but can't put his finger on it. He probes a bit, asking about their relationship, but when Jordan tells one story and Mia tells another, he's more confused than ever.

Not exactly enamored with his student, Dr. Brinner continues his work and steps up for the incoming trauma. Outside, Dr. Brinner and Pratt are attending to two old ladies who were injured during a trust exercise. Abby recalls the time Luca visited her when she was two weeks into rehab, and isn't sure she should travel to see him. Luca has told her that he's quit his job and plans on staying in Croatia with Joe for a while, but that he'll be waiting for her when she is ready to tell him the truth of what happened while he was gone.

As doctors Pratt and Brinner see to their patients, Simon tells intern Larry to go through and assist Pratt in the next room. Larry fails to impress Dr. Pratt, who lets it slide for the moment. But when Lavern is sent back to Pratt as well, he reminds Brinner that county is a teaching hospital. When Brinner questions his authority, Pratt threatens to report him to human resources and leaves, having fired the warning shot. Pratt then informs the interns to return to Brinner.

Sam questions Tony about Julia quitting her job. He tells her that they've broken up and that Julia has gone to Nepal for at least two years. Meanwhile, Mia's immune system is rejecting her transplanted heart. This upsets Jordan, who demands they see a specialist. Abby confides in Janet, her sponsor, sharing her fears about telling Luca the truth about her affair with Moretti. Janet, unaware of that development, tells Abby that Luca had come to see her at the hospital, and she now understands his frustration.

When Pratt's elderly patient comes back with good results from a CT scan, he goes to check on how Dr. Brinner and his students are doing. Neela is examining an X-ray with Pratt when she is interrupted by Brinner on his way to another patient. Brinner tells Pratt that he must see other patients but will talk to him later.

Morris grabs Neela and ushers her into a room he has set up with monitoring equipment, hoping to convince her to be his research subject. Neela suggests he taser himself. Sam and Tony look after Mia while Jordan is on the phone to her parents. Tony asks why she stopped taking her meds. Mia tells them that her heart belonged to Jordan's fiancée and although she cares for him, she let his connection to her go too far.

Abby questions her ability to believe in herself; Janet reminds her that since she came out of rehab, she is showing everyone just how much self-confidence she has. With those words of encouragement, Abby gets on the plane to Croatia. Sam and Tony tell Jordan that they may not be able to save Mia's heart. Mia also tells Jordan the truth and breaks up with him, but thanks him for his support. Obviously upset, Tony takes Jordan for a walk to take it all in.

Brinner is playing peacekeeper to the battling old ladies. All seems well as the women apologize, but it's soon back to chaos when Pratt takes Brinner outside to air his grievances. After an argument about interns, an egotistical Brinner tells Pratt to keep doing things his way and he will do it his way. Brinner leaves for the night to continue his double date from the morning. Jordan tells Tony that when Beth, his fiancée, died, he found out that Mia had gotten her heart. He wanted to do anything he could to keep Beth alive. Tony tells him it's time to let her go.

Chuny, Frank and Neela look on as Greg fires the taser at Morris for his research experiment. The taser gun was apparently modified and wouldn't turn off, resulting in a two-minute shock. Morris survives, but temporarily can't move his arms. However, when he comes to, he realizes that no one has been shocked that long and had it studied! Jordan and Mia both agree to both go on with their separate lives. Exhausted, Sam heads to the lounge for some sleep, but decides to pull Tony in for a roll in the hay instead. Abby arrives in Croatia and rushes into Luca's arms.
