Abby was trying to calm down Ames who had broken into her and Kovac's place. At the same time, she was trying to console Joe, who was crying out of control. She pleaded with Ames to leave the premise, but he refused. He demanded she call Kovac immediately.

Sam and Ben were asleep in her bed until Ben suddenly awoke. He smelled smoke and could see the orange glow coming from under the door. He woke Sam, who could hear Alex crying for help. They quickly got clothed and dodged the flames as the fire trucks arrived.

Neela and Gates found a frantic Sarah trying to wake up her mom in the front seat of the car. Meg was able whisper to Gates that she took an overdose of pills and then she began to throw up. As she was slipping in and out of consciousness, she told Gates that Sarah was really his daughter.

Kovac rushed home to find Abby with a drunken Ames. He ordered Abby to take the baby and go upstairs. Ames ordered Kovac to take a car ride with him. When they left, Abby immediately called the cops and reported Ames for kidnapping her husband. In the car, Kovac tried desperately to see what Ames wanted.

Sam rushed her neighbor to the ER where he was suffering from burns all over his body. As the man was being treated, he told Sam he knew the fire had started in her apartment. She said she knew that, but didn't know how. Sam became emotional and thought the fire came from a candle that she had lit when she was with Ben. She later told her Grandma she was afraid to find out the truth of how the fire was really started.

Ames had Kovac pull over to a secluded neighborhood where he pistol-whipped him. They watched a family go into their house and Kovac recognized them as Ames family. Ames began to tell Kovac that his wife found somebody new and wanted her kids to call her new boyfriend, "dad". Ames began to break down and cry after sharing the story.

As Neela took Sarah, Gates rushed Meg to the hospital. Gates and Ray frantically worked on Meg until Ray had no choice but to give up on her lifeless body as Sarah and Neela looked on. Gates begged the doctors to give him a little more time to try to save Meg. Sarah asked Gates if her mom was going to die and Gates just looked at her. Sarah began to talk to her mom and begged her to come back to her.

Ames had Kovac drive to an abandoned building and gave him a tour. Kovac asked if this belonged to Ames and Ames said he bought it four years ago determined to make it a dream house, but now his dreams had vanished and the bank took the house. He then asked Kovac to put his right hand in a vice and tighten it, so he could learn what it feels like to lose use of the hand that you work with.

Kovac put his hand in the vice and began to slowly tighten it. Ames kicked the handle to tighten the vice even harder and Kovac screamed in pain. Ames wanted Kovac to describe the pain to him. As Kovac talked about his pain, Ames noticed cop cars outside. They were responding to the neighbors calling about all the chaos.

Abby followed the cops as they went after Ames. She pleaded with them to let her through because Kovac was in there, too. Kovac and Ames were at the rooftop and Kovac begged Ames to let all the pain go because it was too late. Ames said he couldn't just let all of his anger and pain go.

Ames ordered Kovac towards the edge of the rooftop as he still pointed the gun at him. Ames still wanted his revenge on Kovac for ruining his life. Meanwhile, Kovac's phone was on speaker so the police squad and Abby could hear the entire conversation. Kovac apologized for everything that happened to Ames while he was in the ER. Ames pointed his gun and all that was heard were gunshots.

The police had no idea who fired the shots from the rooftop. Abby was hysterical thinking that Ames had shot Kovac. As the police headed up to the rooftop, Kovac headed outside. Abby immediately rushed to Kovac's side and gave him a huge embrace, just as the cops discovered Ames with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
