Sam's ex-husband, Steve, arrived in the ER complaining of stomach pains. Luka offered to give him a nurse other than Sam, but Sam didn't mind. At first, she just thought it was Steve being clever and buying some time away from his jail cell. Clemente wanted to release him, but Neela thought he should stay for observation.

Abby treated a girl, Ruthie, for minor injuries involving a car accident. She was more concerned about Ruthie's guardian, her grandmother, who showed signs of Alzheimer's. She tested the woman and the signs all pointed Abby being right, meaning she was not in good enough mental shape to care for her granddaughter.

Morris came to blows with Albright over a patient. Albright demanded that the staff prep for surgery, while Morris went over her head and ran more tests to avoid it. Albright confronted Morris in front of the ER staff and he continued his tests on the patient, proving Albright wrong.

Weaver had had surgery to correct her disability. She no longer needed a cane to walk. She decided to come back to the ER earlier than expected to show off the new shape she was in. Nobody noticed that she didn't have her cane. She just blended in with everybody else.

Luka and Abby disagreed about her patient. Luka believed that Abby should call child services to report the ailing grandmother. Abby felt it wasn't her position to tear a family apart, especially since Ruthie had already lost both her parents. Just then, Abby spotted Ruth running away from the hospital.

Clemente ran to Steve's side when it was discovered that his appendix had burst. Neela told Clemente that she was right for keeping Steve in the hospital overnight. Sam didn't leave his side as they prepped for surgery. Meanwhile, Clemente continued to get threatening phone calls from his girlfriend's ex-husband.

Ruthie returned to the hospital with groceries and books. She told Abby she had no intentions of running away from her grandmother, in fact, she had just bought books on Alzheimer's and how to take care of oneself. Abby told Ruthie that she wouldn't call child services.

Albright found Morris hiding in the supply room and demanded an apology from him. He felt he didn't owe her anything since he saved her patient from surgery. She became so angry with him that she grabbed him... then kissed him!

Pratt arrived in Darfur and quickly realized life would be a lot different than it was back in Chicago. On his way back to camp with two of his co-workers, members of the rebel troop the Janjuweed stopped their vehicle. Their car didn't start back up and they had to walk back to the campsite, where Pratt was quickly introduced to the famine and violence of Darfur.
