When the body of a young man is found burned in an alley the CSIs are called in to find out why someone would brutally kill him in this manner. Further forensic testing concludes that the young man was struck by a car at a low speed before he was set on fire. The victim was a former drug addict that had a lethal amount of heroin in his system at the time of his death which made investigators initially believe he may have gone back to his old ways. When they find that the victim has a $2.5 million dollar insurance policy with his fiancée as the beneficiary, suddenly the investigation heads in an entirely new direction. The car that struck the victim is soon found and CSIs are surprised to discover evidence linking the car to another young man’s murder, also a recovering drug addict, who was killed in the same manner just six months prior. When the team uncovers he also had a girlfriend that cashed in on a multi-million dollar insurance policy they know they are looking at an insurance scam of the worst kind. Turns out, two young women that work with recovering addicts at University hospital found the two victims on the street and helped them recover from addiction with the sole intention of taking out multi-million dollar insurance policies in their names and at the two year mark, when the policies matured, killed them in order to collect the money. They even had a third potential victim, the owner of the car that was used to kill the other two victims, who narrowly escaped their greedy and gruesome plan. Mac and the team get the women to confess and the third young man was given back his second chance at life.
