DOUBLE U-TURN HEATS UP HANOIAs the Race headed to Hanoi, Vietnam, teams targeted Joey & Meghan and Mona & Beth for the Double U-Turn because of their alliance with Jessica & John. In the end, Chuck & Wynona came in last, but because Dave & Connor withdrew, the married couple stayed in the Race.

HEADING HOME

Departing the Pit Stop in first place at 5:01am, father and son Dave & Connor ripped open their clue sending them over 2,000 miles north to the ancient city of Hanoi, Vietnam. Once they touched down, they had to make their way to the center of the city and find Rap Cong Nhan Theater inside Gallery 42 for their next clue.In the taxi en route to a travel agency, Dave revealed that he and Connor would be leaving the Race when they landed in Hanoi. When the injury to his left Achilles tendon worsened, Dave heeded the recommendation of his doctor at home who recommended surgery within seven days of the incident. Connor said, "This has been a chance of a lifetime. It's been amazing."At the travel agency, newlyweds Max & Katie and best friends Pam & Winnie met up with Dave & Connor, who revealed to the two teams that they would be dropping out in Hanoi. While sad to see the father and son leave, Pam & Winnie joked, "We're finally going to be able to come out on top without someone in a wheelchair rolling by us." After all three teams booked seats on a flight landing in Hanoi at 6:00pm, the conversation quickly turned to the U-Turn that would appear somewhere in the leg. Max & Katie and Pam & Winnie agreed that the alliance of Jessica & John (neither team knew the outcome of the previous leg), Mona & Beth, and Joey & Meghan needed to be split.

U-TURN TALK

The remaining five teams booked tickets on a flight landing in Hanoi at 9:30pm. Two topics surrounded their conversation – the elimination of Jessica & John and the impending U-Turn ahead. On the elimination, Meghan noted, "Us and the roller derby moms [are] more vulnerable and weaker. We were on cloud nine...and now we are just trying to stay on the Race." Believing they were U-Turn targets, roller derby moms Mona & Beth vowed to race the leg hard but also planned to continue working with their allies Joey & Meghan. Hockey brothers Bates & Anthony also believed teams would target them for a U-Turn. Bates even admitted, "I'd probably use it on me if it was the opposite situation."

SHOCKING NEWS

Landing in Hanoi, Pam & Winnie and Max & Katie took taxis to Gallery 42 and arrived there at 7:34pm, over an hour and a half after it closed for the night. Since the gallery would not reopen until 9:00am the next morning, the two teams took shelter for the night at Hotel des Artistes, awaiting the arrival of the remaining teams. As the two teams settled in and got comfortable on the floor, Max entertained everyone with his impression of John. Laughing as Max mimicked John's voice, Pam & Winnie later confessed they misjudged the newlyweds before getting to know them. They joked, "Max, your tan is totally cool. Katie, you have the best hair in the world. You guys are awesome."A few hours later, the remaining five teams reached Hotel des Artistes and dropped the bombshell that Jessica & John had been eliminated still holding their Express Pass. Max simply laughed, attributing the elimination to "overconfidence and conceit" while Katie called them "idiots." Watching people laugh at their friends' expense, Joey later said, "I don't like Max at all. He started talking crap about John." Equally upset, Meghan added, "I wanted to punch him." However, the Youtube hosts chose to remain silent because they knew they would just create give other teams all the more reason to target them for the U-Turn.The five teams on the second flight to Hanoi asked Max & Katie and Pam & Winnie where Dave & Connor had gone. Pam lied to the teams, telling them that Dave & Connor traveled with them to Singapore, stayed there to see a doctor, and would join the teams in the morning at Gallery 42. Winnie later explained that she, Pam, and Max & Katie agreed to lie about Dave & Connor quitting to make the other teams more relaxed after thinking that had the father and son behind them.

EXITING IN STYLE

The next morning, Dave & Connor ran onto the Pit Stop mat at the National Museum of Vietnamese History where Phil eliminated them from the Race. As tears began to fall, Dave told Phil, "I don't want to let my son down, but it's come to an end." Also crying, Connor told his dad, "My dad has never let me down. He's amazing. He's my best friend. He's my hero. I'd rather run four legs with you than win the million dollar with anyone else." After a long embrace, Dave told his son he loved him, and as they walked off the mat, Dave said, "I really am sorry, Connor." Connor replied, "I'm not."

HATCHING A PLAN

Before 9:00am, Caroline & Jennifer, Pam & Winnie, Bates & Anthony, Max & Katie, and Chuck & Wynona gathered on the steps outside Gallery 42 to discuss the upcoming U-Turn. Those five teams agreed to target Joey & Meghan and Mona & Beth. Winnie referred to them "the last of their little Jessica & John minion group." Excited about the plan, Anthony added, "Without their leader [John], maybe we can get one of those other teams out of there." Max added, "They made their bed. Now they're gonna have to lie in it." When Joey & Meghan and Mona & Beth reached the steps, they were greeted by total silence from the other teams. Meghan noted, "There's a really weird tension in the air right now." Joey acknowledged that he and Meghan were prime U-Turn targets, but he hoped to reach the stand ahead of other teams to avoid being U-Turned. Mona also believed that she and Beth were targets.

WORD PLAY

At 9:00am, the doors to Gallery 42 opened, and the seven teams ran inside and ripped open their clues to find a Roadblock. In it, one team member had to watch the performance of a patriotic Vietnamese song. At the end, dancers would reveal the words of a celebrated Vietnamese quote that translated in English to "glory to our young generation". After memorizing the words, they had to run to a nearby room where they would have five minutes to find the quote hidden among hundreds of posters before the next performance began. Jennifer, Meghan, Pam, Anthony, Beth, Katie, and Chuck all took seats in the front row of a large theater just as the first performance began. Unable to write any notes on paper, the seven racers carefully watched the stage as three men began singing a song surrounded by flag bearers proudly waving Vietnam's red flag. Then, just before the song ended, a parade of young women shaking large colorful paper flowers in a choreographed routine, danced in front of the singers. Six of the women knelt on the stage floor and revealed nine words written on their flowers: Vinh quang thay the ne than nien chung ta (glory to our young generation). With only five minutes between performances, the racers quickly studied the words on the flowers and then ran through the back of the theater into a room containing hundreds of posters. Each poster contained a Vietnamese quote that bore a close resemblance to the one they just saw in the performance. Chuck noted, "If you didn't have it down to the letter you were gonna be pulling a lot of posters." Anthony, Jennifer, and Katie all presented a poster with the same mistake ("quars" instead of "quang") on their first guess while Chuck submitted one with the word "jhe" instead of "the". Relying on the strong visual memory she uses as an art director, Pam grabbed the correct poster on her first try. She ripped open the next clue with Winnie instructing the best friends to make their way to Cong Vien Thong Nhat and take part in a Vietnamese bamboo dance.

ALLIANCE AID

As Pam & Winnie jumped into a taxi, the second performance began in the theater. With another chance to study the words, Chuck, Katie, and Jennifer all picked the correct poster on their second try. Deciding to team up in a natural alliance, Beth and Meghan each memorized half of the quote and then scanned the many posters together hoping to find two correct ones. However, the plan hit a snag when Meghan found a poster with the correct slogan, but Beth didn't. Instead of submitting the poster for her clue, Meghan returned it to the wall and ran back into the theater for a third performance with Beth and Anthony. Meghan later commented, "It felt wrong just leaving Beth. I needed to stay there and help her." On the third run, Meghan quickly grabbed the correct poster she left behind as Beth and Anthony each found one of their own. The three last teams exited Gallery 42 within seconds of each other as Meghan sighed, "I hope we're not U-Turned."

GIVING A HUG

Arriving at Cong Vien Thong Nhat, best friends Pam & Winnie watched as two women demonstrated the bamboo dance before attempting it themselves. They held hands and danced through a line of people sitting on the ground holding bamboo poles making sure to jump over the poles that moved to the music. Winnie later said, "The best things about being on this Race is to experience all the new cultural things that every country welcomes us to be a part of." Pam added, "It kind of feels like the country gives us a little hug." Reaching the other end of the line after successfully jumping over the bamboo poles, Pam & Winnie ripped open their next clue to find a Detour having the choose between Make Your Move and Make Your Meal. Make Your Move required teams to refer to a board game of Chinese chess, choose four chess pieces on the board, and match them with their human counterparts that were wearing symbols of the same shape and color of the chess pieces. Then, they had to place the human chess pieces in the corresponding positions from the board game onto a life-sized chessboard. Make Your Meal required teams to make traditional Vietnamese pho. First, racers would pick up two empty baskets and two baskets of live chickens. Then, they had to navigate a bustling market to purchase the correct amount of ingredients from a shopping list and then carry them to a cooking station to be weighed. After confirming they had the correct amount of each ingredient on their list the prepared two bowls of pho, and the chef would hand them their next clue.

MAKE YOUR MOVE Because they both knew how to play Chinese chess, Pam & Winnie wasted no time in choosing Make Your Move. Arriving at the Temple of Literature, the best friends walked past the courtyard where the human chess pieces milled about into another courtyard where two men sat next to a huge grid meant to represent a life-sized board. Picking four pieces on the chessboard in close proximity to each other, Pam & Winnie put markers on huge board as placeholders until they found the corresponding human pieces. The duo started looking at the symbols on the chests of the human pieces trying to match them to the symbols of the pieces they picked from the chessboard. On their first attempt, Pam & Winnie failed to notice the two different colors (red and blue) of the symbols thinking it made no difference. The friends had all four symbols correct, but two of the colors were wrong. When they realized their mistake, they exchanged two of their human pieces wearing red symbols with two wearing blue to successfully match the board. Ripping open their next clue, Pam & Winnie discovered they had to make their way to the B-52 Memorial and ran out of the temple just as Bates & Anthony, Meghan & Joey, and Caroline & Jennifer arrived.

MAKE YOUR MEAL Meanwhile, newlyweds Max & Katie picked up a shopping list along with their four baskets. After walking through the congested streets, the newlyweds reached the crowded marketplace and began looking for the ingredients they needed before running into a major problem. The shopping list was written in English, a language that almost no vendor in the market spoke. Unable to communicate, Max & Katie enlisted the help of an English-speaking local who acted as a translator. With the local's help, Max & Katie purchased noodles, bean sprouts, onions, ginger, basil, chili peppers, and various other items and carried the food over to the cooking station for weighing. While the newlyweds successfully delivered the correct amounts of seven ingredients, they failed to purchase enough basil and chili peppers forcing them to return to the market for more. Finally, the newlyweds received approval to begin cooking their bowls of pho. Watching the demonstration, Max & Katie dropped their noodles into boiling water to cook them and then put the remaining ingredients into two separate bowls. After putting the cooked noodles into the bowls, they poured broth on top and served the dish to the chef who handed them their next clue. Married couple Chuck & Wynona had trouble from the very beginning after choosing Make Your Meal. First, the couple only took the two empty baskets leaving the two with chickens behind. Then, when they couldn't find the marketplace, Chuck kept asking people for directions ignoring Wynona who tried to remind him the clue stated that the market was near a temple. As Chuck went into a bank to get directions again, Wynona stood outside, fuming, "He doesn't listen to anything. Mr. Know it all." After finally finding the market and beginning their shopping, Wynona snipped, "We need 12 limes...and a husband that listens."

STICK TO THE PLAN Arriving at the B-52 Memorial, Pam & Winnie found a Blind Double U-Turn giving two teams the opportunity to slow two others by forcing them to perform both sides of the Detour. In this case, any team that U-Turns another would remain anonymous. The best friends chose to stick with the plan created on the steps of Gallery 42 and U-Turned Joey & Meghan. Ripping open their clue, Pam & Winnie discovered they had to make their way to the Pit Stop at the Vietnam National Museum of History. Reaching the U-Turn in second place, Joey & Meghan were shocked to see their faces on the board as Meghan asked, "Can we not catch a break today?" The Youtube hosts held their emotions in check for a moment to decide who they wanted to U-Turn. To give them a cushion of safety, they decided on married couple Chuck & Wynona. In the taxi heading to the market, Meghan said, "I'm so angry right now. They all have an alliance. Stepping on the mat at the Pit Stop in first place, best friends Pam & Winnie jumped with excitement after winning their first leg. For their victory, the pair received a trip for two from Travelocity to Whistler. When asked by Phil if they were now feeling confident, Winnie replied, "You never want to feel super confident because that's when you let your guard down. You can ask John."

FIERY RIGHTEOUSNESS With Max & Katie, Mona & Beth, and Bates & Anthony finishing in second, third, and fourth place respectively, Joey & Meghan picked up their four baskets and shopping list before walking over to the marketplace. After buying all of the ingredients, the Youtube hosts carried them to the cooking station where Chuck & Wynona were just rejected for not having enough bean sprouts. While Joey & Meghan had more items wrong from their shopping list, Chuck & Wynona noticed that the Youtube hosts had one important item that they didn't have – chickens. In the time it took Chuck & Wynona to pick up their chickens and return to the cooking station, Joey & Meghan had already finished their bowls of pho to earn their next clue and a sixth place finish behind country singers Caroline & Jennifer. On the mat, Meghan said, "Now I'm just a huge ball of fiery righteousness. Revenge. It is coming."

TORTUROUS DAY In last place, Chuck & Wynona, already reeling from a difficult time making pho, looked stunned when they realized they had been U-Turned. In the taxi heading to Make Your Move, Chuck said, "Not great news for us. My feelings have been crushed." After putting the chess pieces on the board, the married couple stepped on the mat at the Pit Stop in last place. Lucky for them, Phil told them that they were still in the Race because Dave & Connor had to withdraw. Relieved and exhausted, the couple told Phil the Race was "torturous" for them, but they still want to be here. Chuck added, "We're gonna start fresh on the next leg. I promise I'm going to listen to her, let her voice her opinion. We do certainly need to make the most of our opportunity right now and carry on with this Race."2205 ROUTE MARKERS
