AceShowbiz - A new stage musical celebrating the career of John Farnham is set to make its debut in Sydney later this year. Whispering Jack: The John Farnham Musical will premiere on November 15, 2026, at the Roslyn Packer Theatre, as part of the Sydney Theatre Company’s season, as announced by producers on February 2.

The production will feature Michael Paynter in the iconic role of Farnham. Paynter has previously led the 2025 Australian season of Jesus Christ Superstar and has toured with Farnham himself. He has also been a part of ICEHOUSE and Jimmy Barnes’ touring bands, showcasing his impressive musical range.

Paynter expressed his excitement about the role, stating, “To be asked to help tell the story of the greatest voice this country has ever produced is an honour that is very hard to put into words. For me, John Farnham is the absolute zenith of male singers in all of history.”

Released in 1986, Whispering Jack became the highest-selling Australian album of all time, marking a significant turning point in Farnham's career. The musical will delve into the creation and enduring legacy of this groundbreaking album, which features the hit song “You’re the Voice.” This track dominated the Australian singles chart for seven consecutive weeks and remains one of the country’s best-selling songs.

Producer Gaynor Wheatley noted that Paynter’s casting followed an extensive search for the perfect performer. “When Michael Paynter performed the material for the first time, there was an immediate sense of recognition in the room,” she said.

Artistic director Mitchell Butel emphasized Farnham’s multifaceted talent, stating, “John Farnham is more than just an incredible voice. He is the ultimate showman and musical storyteller.”
