AceShowbiz - Kevin Costner has responded to the fan backlash surrounding the death of his character, John Dutton, on the hit series "Yellowstone".
Following news of his departure in June, the second half of Season 5 premiered earlier this month, shocking viewers with John's fatal shooting. The plot twist was orchestrated by the girlfriend of his estranged son Jamie, Sarah Atwood.
At the 2024 Governors Awards, Costner addressed the controversy, stating that "fans have a voice in things, and they choose to follow stuff."
The 69-year-old actor revealed that he had pitched two different endings for his character to creator Taylor Sheridan. However, Costner emphasized that the producers ultimately made the decision. "Who am I? They do what they want. That's fine with me," he quipped.
Despite the outrage, Costner maintained a calm demeanor, saying that he hadn't seen the episode himself and wasn't too keen on watching his own death.
Addressing his departure from the show, Costner clarified that he didn't "quit" but had contractually agreed to do three seasons. However, negotiations for additional contracts posed challenges that ultimately led to his exit.
While the death of John Dutton has sent shockwaves through the "Yellowstone" universe, Costner remains unfazed by the fan backlash. The future of the series remains uncertain, with rumors of a potential Season 6 focusing on Beth and Rip. Additionally, several spinoffs are in the works, including "The Madison" starring Michelle Pfeiffer.
