AceShowbiz - Ian McKellen has revealed that a fat suit he was wearing during a performance of "Player Kings" saved him from more serious injuries when he fell off the stage. The 85-year-old actor, who portrays Sir John Falstaff in the production, injured both his neck and wrist during the fall, which occurred during a battle scene.
He said in an interview with Saga Magazine that he was nervous about leaving his home due to his injuries, which have left him in "agonizing pain."
However, McKellen stated that the fat suit he wore for the role protected his ribs and other joints, which he sees as fortunate. He admitted to replaying the fall in his mind numerous times and finding it horrifying. He initially believed it signaled the end of his career in the play due to the severity of the incident.
McKellen's injuries prevented him from returning to the production, and his understudy, David Semark, took over the role of Falstaff. The actor expressed his gratitude to the medical professionals who treated him and said he felt "hugely indebted" to them.
Despite the accident, McKellen remains determined to continue acting, reminding himself that he is not too old for the profession. He believes it was merely an unfortunate accident, as he did not lose consciousness or feel dizzy at the time of the fall.
McKellen previously stated that he has no plans to retire as long as his health permits. One potential project that could see him return to the screen is the upcoming "Gollum" movie, where he may reprise his role as Gandalf. However, the actor emphasized that there is currently no offer or script for him just yet. Andy Serkis has been confirmed to direct the project.
