AceShowbiz - Ryan Reynolds is reprising his role as Deadpool in the upcoming film "Deadpool & Wolverine", but the journey to this exciting revival was far from straightforward. After Disney acquired FOX in 2019, Reynolds was unsure if he would ever play the beloved foul-mouthed anti-hero again.
"I didn't know if I'd ever be playing Deadpool again," he admitted in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. "It's not something I would've said necessarily publicly, but I didn't know how a character like that would fit into that world [of the MCU]." The Disney-FOX merger raised questions about how the R-rated, ultra-violent "Deadpool" would fit into the squeaky-clean Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The uncertainty surrounding Deadpool's future led to various creative ideas for the franchise. Reynolds revealed that one concept was "a Rashomon story that had these three different points of view." Another idea pitched for the third installment was an indie road trip comedy.
"Literally, it was a $5 or $6 million budget with no special effects," Reynolds said. This version would have been "a talkie-talkie road trip with me and [Karan Soni's character] Dopinder." While innovative, these ideas were eventually scrapped in favor of a storyline that brings Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine together, a dream come true for many fans.
Initially, the fear of losing the character emerged because the Disney-FOX deal put an end to future plans for FOX's X-Men Movie Universe, including the Deadpool films. Reynolds had taken a gamble with "Deadpool" success, leveraging crude humor and graphic violence that seemed at odds with Disney's family-friendly brand. However, Marvel Studios decided to go ahead with a third Deadpool movie that retains its hard-R edge while integrating into the MCU, much to Reynolds's relief and excitement.
It's not just the storyline that's building anticipation. Reynolds' promotional antics are also catching fans' eyes. In a recent promotional post, Reynolds channeled Taylor Swift, hinting at their close friendship and fueling speculation about Swift's potential cameo in the film. Although EW reports that Swift will not be making an appearance, director Shawn Levy hinted at multiple exciting cameos. "We didn't want any of the cameos or characters to be the story of the movie. But they are peppered in throughout," Levy said.
The anticipation for "Deadpool & Wolverine", set to hit theaters on July 26, is sky-high. Reynolds' journey from uncertainly to absolute excitement provides a promising prelude to what could be one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer.
