Netflix Confirms 'Squid Game' Season 2 With Unsettling Teaser

Director and executive producer Hwang Dong-Hyuk teases that the new season will introduce Cheol-su, the boyfriend of the show's gigantic killer animatronic doll Young-hee.

AceShowbiz - The game is still on. On Sunday, June 12, Netflix took to its social media accounts to confirm that its hit drama series "Squid Game" had been renewed for a second season. The streaming giant also unveiled a brief teaser for the upcoming season.

The new clip featured a brief animation of the gigantic animatronic doll that fans of "Squid Game" may be familiar with. "Red light… GREENLIGHT. Squid Game is officially coming back for Season 2!" the caption read.

Director and executive producer Hwang Dong-Hyuk also released a statement about the highly-anticipated season, detailing which characters are returning for the sophomore outing. "It took 12 years to bring the first season of 'Squid Game' to life last year. But it took 12 days for 'Squid Game' to become the most popular Netflix series ever," read the statement.

"As the writer, director and producer of 'Squid Game', a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show," he added. In his statement, Hwang also teased that both protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and the masked antagonist the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) will return.

He shared, "The man in the suit with ddakji might be back," before stating that the new season will introduce Cheol-su, the boyfriend of the show's gigantic killer animatronic doll Young-hee. He concluded, "Join us once more for a whole new round."

Back in October, Netflix confirmed that "Squid Game" was the "biggest-ever series at launch" for the company. It is also the platform's first-ever Korean series to reach No. 1 in the United States, attracting 1.65 billion hours of viewing in the 28 days following its release.
