Viola Davis to Carry Out Double Duties in Shirley Chisholm Biopic

The leading lady of 'How to Get Away with Murder' will be portraying the first black congresswoman in a movie she will produce under JuVee Productions.

AceShowbiz - Oscar winner Viola Davis is to play groundbreaking politician Shirley Chisholm in the first film linked to a new production deal she has signed with Amazon Studios bosses.

Viola will also produce "The Fighting Shirley Chisholm", which will chronicle the first woman and the first person of colour's bid to become U.S. President.

Amazon Studios chiefs signed off on the new first-look production deal with Davis and her husband Julius Tennon's JuVee Productions earlier this month, and "The Fighting Shirley Chisholm" will be the first film produced under the arrangement.

Deadline sources claim Amazon Studios executives acquired the rights to the film in a fierce bidding war, and they have tapped Maggie Betts to direct Adam Countee's screenplay.

Chisholm ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1968 and became the first black woman elected to Congress. In January, 1972 she announced her presidential bid in a Baptist church in her Brooklyn district.
