Titled 'Piano and a Microphone 1983', the album will include nine tracks taken from cassette recordings of him playing on a piano in his home studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

AceShowbiz - Prince's heirs have marked the late music icon's birthday by announcing the release of an album featuring unheard material.

When the star died in April 2016, he left a huge vault of unused music, and on Thursday, June 07, on what would have been Prince's 60th birthday, representatives for his estate announced news of the new record.

The album, called "Piano & A Microphone 1983", includes nine tracks taken from cassette recordings of him playing on a piano in his home studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

Songs that will appear on the record include unheard versions of "17 Days" and "Purple Rain", as well as a cover of Joni Mitchell's 1971 hit "A Case Of You".

"This raw, intimate recording, which took place at the start of Prince's career right before he achieved international stardom, is similar in format to the 'Piano & A Microphone' Tour that he ended his career with in 2016," Prince's Estate entertainment adviser Troy Carter said in a statement to Billboard magazine.

"The Estate is excited to be able to give fans a glimpse of his evolution and show how his career ultimately came full circle with just him and his piano."

"Piano & A Microphone 1983" will be released on 21 September by The Prince Estate and Warner Bros. Records.

Prince's vault of unreleased material reportedly includes the master tapes to 30 unpublished albums, worth an estimated $200 million (£149 million). Last month Jay-Z announced he would producing a posthumous Prince album.

The musician died at his Paisley Park home after overdosing on opioid medication and did not leave a will.
