The "Pacific Rim" movie franchise could crossover with Legendary's Monster universe, says "Pacific Rim Uprising" director Steven S. DeKnight. Speaking to Collider, the former "Daredevil" showrunner reveals that there have been discussions of a potential crossover with "Godzilla" and "King Kong".

"I won't say there's an Easter Egg but there's been a lot of discussion about that possibility [of crossing over]," DeKnight tells the outlet. "Look I think it would be fantastic to have the 'Pacific Rim' universe join Legendary's Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step," he goes on saying.

"And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we've talked about is that could happen, it's always a possibility," he continues. "It's by far not a certainty; it's merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself I would love to see that happen."

In the interview, DeKnight also talks about a possible follow-up to "Pacific Rim: Uprising". "Oh we definitely leave it open to another installment," says the helmer. "The tricky thing with something like this is you want to not end on a cliffhanger," he continues.

The helmer explains that "you don't want an 'Empire Strikes Back' cliffhanger unless you know you're gonna do a third movie--you want to leave it open but also wrap it up. So that's very much what we did on this movie." He adds, "It has a definitive ending but very much open to the next chapter."

"Pacific Rim Uprising" is scheduled for a March 23, 2018 release. It stars John Boyega ("Star Wars: The Force Awakens") as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, Scott Eastwood ("The Fate of the Furious") as Jake's gifted rival pilot Lambert and newcomer Cailee Spaeny as a 15-year-old Jaeger hacker named Amara.

Legendary helped bring Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" to theaters with Warner Bros. in 2013, before the studio later brought back "Godzilla" in 2014 with WB again. Legendary also made a deal with Universal to bring "Kong: Skull Island" to Warner Bros., setting the groundwork for "Godzilla vs. Kong" in 2020.

Legendary and Warner Bros. currently have "Godzilla: King of Monsters" in post-production. The film starring Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga as a family is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on March 22, 2019.
