"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" is getting a prequel. According to Variety, Warner Bros. is developing a new movie focusing on the eccentric character and his early adventures after acquiring the rights to the "Willy Wonka" IP from the Roald Dahl Estate.

The studio will reteam-up with "Harry Potter" producer David Heyman, who recently worked with the studio in making "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them". Michael Siegel of Dahl Estate and Kevin McCronick will serve as executive producers.

No director has been announced for the movie which has yet to set a release date. Screenwriter Simon Rich ("Inside Out (2015)", "The Secret Life of Pets") is attached to pen the screenplay for the movie which is still in early stages of development.

Willy Wonka was made famous by late actor Gene Wilder in the 1971 original movie. In 2005, a remake titled "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was directed by Tim Burton, with Johnny Depp starring as the chocolatier.
