Mark Hammill on if Luke Skywalker Is Gay: 'Of Course He Is'

'Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves,' the actor says in response to speculations that Luke is the homosexual character director J.J. Abram recently talked about.

AceShowbiz - "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams recently revealed that he would definitely feature a gay character in future "Star Wars" films. There have since been speculations that Luke Skywalker, who's never been romantically linked to anyone in the saga, might be the one the filmmaker's talking about.

Mark Hamill, who portrays the infamous character, then addressed the speculations in a new interview with The Sun, telling the British news outlet that Luke's sexuality's open to interpretation and it shouldn't change what fans think about him.

"I just read online that J.J. is very much open to that. In the old days, you would get fan mail," he said. "But now fans are writing and asking all these questions: 'I'm bullied in school... I'm afraid to come out.' They say to me: 'Could Luke be gay?' I'd say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer."

"If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves," he added.

Abrams said at the U.S.-Ireland Alliance Oscar Wilde Awards last week that he decided to have at least one gay character in his movies because he wanted them to "look the way the world looks." He explained, "To me the fun of 'Star Wars' is exploring the possibilities, so it seems insanely narrow minded to say that there wouldn't be a homosexual character in that world."

Fans have also speculated that the gay characters might be Finn and Poe Dameron. The two were introduced in "The Force Awakens" and built a friendship that could end up being a homosexual relationship.
