The latest James Bond movie opened to $70.4 million, becoming the second biggest Bond opening of all time.

AceShowbiz - The newest James Bond movie, "Spectre", rocked this weekend's box office with $70.4 million from 3929 theaters, becoming the second biggest Bond debut of all time. "Spectre" outpaced "Quantum of Solace", which opened to $67.5 million in 2008, and came just behind "Skyfall", which launched to $88.4 million in 2012.

"It's a fantastic start. On every continent - including Latin America, Asia and Europe - it is breaking 'Skyfall' records," said Sony worldwide distribution president Rory Bruer. "When you look at the global piece, it's absolutely extraordinary. We're breaking records in Latin America, in Southeast Asia and Europe."

Another newcomer which made a solid debut this weekend was the "Peanuts" movie. The animated film centering on Charlie Brown and the gang opened to $44.2 million from 3897 theaters. "With the strong exit polls and being able to hit all segments of the moviegoing audience, I think we've launched a new franchise for younger people and reinvigorated it for everyone who grew up with the Peanuts gang," said Fox distribution chief Chris Aronson.

Holdover "The Martian" still performed well in its sixth weekend, earning another $9.1 million from 2855 theaters for a domestic total of $196.8 million. The Matt Damon space movie placed number three, beating out family movie "Goosebumps", which grossed $6.8 million in its fourth weekend. Rounding out the top five was Tom Hanks's "Bridge of Spies", which grossed $5.8 million for a domestic total of $54.7 million.
