Randy Quaid and his wife Evi were taken into custody by Vermont State Police on Friday, October 9. The "Independence Day" actor and his spouse were arrested as "fugitives from justice" and "subject to extradition" when trying to cross the border from Canada into the United States.

The couple left the American soil in 2010 when they were facing felony vandalism charges for squatting in a guesthouse of a home they previously owned. They skipped several court appearances and then escaped to Canada before they could be charged, saying they're victims of persecution.

Evi Quaid was granted citizenship in Canada but Randy's bid to gain permanent residency was denied in 2012. He was to be deported back to the U.S. on October 14 when he was detained with his wife on Friday by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the Highgate Springs port of entry.

Randy, who was last seen on the big screen in 2009's "Balls Out: Gary the Tennis Coach", is currently being held at the North West State Correctional Center while Evi was transported to the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility. Their bails were set at $500,000 each.

Several days before their arrest at the border, Randy was detained in Montreal because officials feared he might not comply with the deportation order. He was released after a Thursday hearing. In an interview with The Associated Press from a detention center in Laval, Quebec, on Wednesday, he said, "I would like to have the issues in Santa Barbara resolved so I can move on with my life."

Back in May, Randy was also arrested in Montreal after he stopped checking in with border authorities. After an apology, he was released with the requirement to check in every two weeks.
