the film itself is nearly as chaotic as the clan it examines can either be regarded as an admirable artistic correlative or a crippling defect, but the splendidly dexterous cast ensures that this goofy success story
Russell doesn't quite figure out how to tell these stories concurrently, or even consecutively, resulting in a pile-up of characters and incidents and emotions that never satisfyingly coheres
