the biggest problem with "Into the Ashes" is the time it wastes on moral dilemmas, when it's clear Nick has only one choice. There is never any doubt where this is going, and the film takes far too long to get there
an Out of the Past -like story about a man trying to leave crime behind, but the high spirits are gone; the film's slow pace and half-hearted perspective shifts don't generate the gravitas that's clearly intended
"Into the Ashes" keeps us guessing throughout as to which of these characters will still be standing after their paths cross in brutal, bloody fashion; it's still a good yarn filled with arresting visuals and solid performances
