while the magical realist conceit of Colossal may seem just a tad too hip for some viewers' tastes-and those who come looking for kaiju action will be, for the most part, disappointed-there's no denying that this film is an original
it's all of these things in one, and thanks to a particularly fine-tuned script and a tremendous balance of tone from Vigalondo as a director, it succeeds far more than it fails
even if the script's psychological reach ultimately falls short, Colossal is still a clever, comic, wildly surreal ride - right up until the last sucker-punch frame
