When extreme summer heat causes a blackout across the city, Hope Zion - the only hospital with a working generator - gets swarmed with patients from blacked-out hospitals across town. Joel appoints Alex leader of the Trauma Team, and she's thrown into the deep end as patients start spilling in.
To further complicate matters, Alex's paramedic brother Luke shows up with an overdose patient, and quickly starts getting in the Trauma Team's way. In the O.R., Charlie and Dawn operate on a patient who was driving during the blackout and crashed into a tree, but during their operation, Hope Zion suddenly loses power.
The entire hospital is forced to turn to back-up generators - but this particular surgery isn't designed to run on a back-up source.
As if all this wasn't stressful enough, Charlie must help the patient's spirit find her girlfriend in order to convince her to fight for her life. Meanwhile, Joel and Maggie get stuck in an elevator with a patient who's on his way to dialysis to treat his flesh eating disease.
The pressure - and the heat - is on in this week's chaotic episode; will the Hope Zion doctors be able to keep their cool?
