The authorities bring Ethan back to Phoenix for his trial, and his case is all over the news. Back at school, Emma must deal with the fallout of his arrest. Meanwhile, Baz invites Laurel to the music festival in Coachella with her band, but she tells him her parents would never let her go. During family dinner, Laurel asks Ted and Kristin if she can go to the festival, but Ted tells her she cannot attend.

Thayer goes to pick up Sutton at the ranch where he learns that Ben thinks Ethan and Sutton are more than just friends. When Thayer and Sutton arrive at the cabin, Mads confronts her about hitting on Ryan and keeping her in the dark about knowing she had a twin.

Emma visits Dan to help her find a better attorney, and he calls Theresa Lopez, an old friend. Over dinner, we learn that Theresa is actually Dan's ex-girlfriend and a very good attorney, and she agrees to take on Ethan's case. Theresa meets with Emma and her friends, who tell her that Alec might be involved in Derek's murder. Alec's involvement makes Theresa nervous, but she agrees to continue working on Ethan's case anyway.

Emma visits Rebecca to ask for advice, and Rebecca tells Emma to leave Alec to her, promising it will work out. On their date, Rebecca asks Alec why he is so sure Ethan is guilty, but they are interrupted when their waiter brings Rebecca a note that someone left for her. It reads: "Don't trust your date."

Later, Theresa gives a message from Ethan to Emma, saying that he misses her. Emma asks Theresa to find a way for her to see Ethan. Emma leaves to visit Sutton at the cabin and convinces her to let her continue playing "Sutton" until Ethan's case is over. While Emma is in the other room, she gets a text from Theresa, arranging a meeting with Ethan. Sutton intercepts the message and agrees to meet at the jailhouse and then deletes the text so Emma will never know. Pretending to be Emma, Sutton goes to see Ethan and lies to him, saying Emma slept with Thayer while he was gone.

Alec and Rebecca go to breakfast before the arraignment, and Rebecca receives a message on her phone: a picture of Alec holding Derek's murder weapon at the scene of the crime. Alec admits that he was at the garage because he got some text messages from Derek that day, but Derek told him that he never sent them, so Alec left. Rebecca asks Alec if he killed Derek Rogers, but we don't hear his answer.

At Ethan's arraignment, the judge announces that the case has been dismissed for insufficient evidence. When Emma goes to embrace him, Ethan ignores her (thinking that she cheated on him), leaving Emma left alone and confused. Later that night, Sutton comes by to see Emma and lies, telling her she slept with Ethan while they were on the run.
