With Thayer's help, Emma explains her and Sutton's lying game to Mads. Mads is relieved to know the truth and thanks Emma for being such a good friend to her. On the ranch, Ethan's father Ben gets a visitor-a woman, who buys horses from him every year... and harbors a not-so-secret crush on him. Sutton and Ethan bond while watching Ben awkwardly interact with her. Ethan and Sutton invite her to dinner, and Sutton tries to soften the mood with an icebreaker game, which ends badly. After dinner, Sutton tells Ethan that she wishes she would have been honest with him about her twin from the beginning and that things would be different between them. Sutton's apology prompts Ethan to confront his father, and they share a sweet moment.

Justin tries to help Laurel work on writing a new song, but she isn't ready to show it to him. They are interrupted by Rebecca, who tells Laurel that she found a pro that wants to produce a demo for her band. Laurel shares the news with her parents-Kristin is thrilled for her daughter, but Ted makes it clear that he is uncomfortable with the situation. Laurel confides in Emma that her new song is about the darker parts of her relationship with Justin, so Emma urges Laurel to be honest with Justin. When Justin shows up after Laurel's recording session, she tells him that she can't see him anymore because she doesn't trust him.

At the police station, Emma and her friends meet with Dan, who tells them that Alec has become obsessed with trying to find Ethan. With a little research, Thayer learns that the college kid, who Derek was dealing to, is in the same fraternity that Alec belonged to. Emma, Thayer and Mads crash a party that the frat is throwing, where they learn a pledge named Jesse saw Alec at Derek's garage the night of the murder. Alec's date with Rebecca is interrupted when he receives a phone call about Ethan.

Mads and Emma try to crack Alec's alibi by having lunch with Rebecca, but a worked-up Ted breaks up their meeting, telling Rebecca to stay away from his family. Kristin confronts Ted about his fight with Rebecca, telling Ted she is tired of the lies and wanting to know why he acts so strange around Rebecca. Alec takes Rebecca on a nice date, and she tells Alec that Mads and Sutton were asking questions about him.

Sutton and Ethan have a heart-to-heart by the fireside, and Ethan thanks her for getting him to open up to his father. Sutton then tells Ethan that she loves him, and they kiss. Shortly after, FBI agents burst into the house and arrest Ethan, leaving a hidden Sutton on her own.
