In what could be her toughest case yet, Kate is enlisted by the Croatian Vice-Consul to help prevent an international incident. A ten-year-old girl named Veronika has been brought to the Croatian consulate by her grandmother, and Nika's guardian, an American, is crying foul. With tempers flaring on both sides of the issue, the family dispute could easily blow up into something much bigger and much more complicated. But Kate's not going to let that happen - not with the happiness and well being of an innocent girl hanging in the balance.

Thanks to Judge Nicastro, the pressure is also on for Kate to do the impossible and find a way to resolve a dispute between Danny and Ralph Sabbatino, two perpetually feuding brothers arguing over a parking space. But with Kate occupied elsewhere, it falls to Leonardo to help with the mediation. Good thing he's been learning from the master...

Unfortunately for Kate, even Leo can’t help her out of every jam. When David Smith shows up at Reed & Reed and Lauren discovers that Kate has kept her recent discoveries about Smith to herself, Kate and Lauren's mutual dislike finally comes to a head. On top of that, Kate just found out that she might be pregnant, but doesn't even have time to talk to Justin about it.
