AceShowbiz - Jussie Smollett has been enjoying a downtime in Hawaii after he was freed of charges in his alleged fake attack case. The 36-year-old actor was spotted hitting the beach on Wednesday, April 10 with his family, looking carefree despite a new legal issue that he's facing.
The "Empire" star was pictured laughing as he ate some snacks at the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park in Kailua on the Big Island. Wearing a white shirt and black short pants, he was chatting with his sisters while unloaded a car with children's bags and towels.
She was also joined by his nieces, nephews and brother-in-law. At times, Jussie reportedly looked tense as he took a phone call and sat in the car, but his good mood returned as he joined his family members to make his way to the water.
It's unknown how long Jussie has been in Hawaii or if he has returned from the vacation. On Thursday, he's officially slapped with a civil lawsuit from the city of Chicago for refusing to pay the cost of the investigation into his report of hate crime attack.
The city's law department said in a statement that it filed a civil complaint against Jussie in the Circuit Court of Cook County "that pursues the full measure of damages allowed under the false statements ordinance." The statement added, "This follows his refusal to reimburse the City of Chicago for the cost of police overtime spent investigating his false police report on January 29, 2019."
The lawsuit suggests that the city will seek monetary amount higher than the $130,000 sought earlier. Under a current city code, Chicago could ask the actor to pay up to three times the amount of damages it sustained.
Jussie's representative and lawyers have not responded to the city's civil complaint. His attorney Mark Geragos previously insisted that his client would not be intimidated into paying $130,000 to the city for investigating his claim he was the victim of a hate crime.
"Mr. Smollett's preference remains, however, that this matter be closed and that he be allowed to move on with his life," wrote Geragos. "Your claim that Smollett filed a false police report and orchestrated his own attack is false and defamatory."
