The 67-year-old actress will reportedly play Poppins' cousin Topsy, a supporting role which wasn't in the 1964 original film. Should the deal be sealed, Streep with reunite with her "Into the Woods" co-star Emily Blunt, director Rob Marshall, and producers Marc Platt and John DeLuca. Streep and Blunt also worked together in "The Devil Wears Prada".

Blunt has been tapped to play the title character in the upcoming movie, which will have a new plot and new songs. "Hamilton" star Lin-Manuel Miranda is cast as a new character, a street lamplighter named Jack.

The movie takes place in Depression-era London and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael's three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

It is scheduled to hit North American theaters on December 25, 2018.
