The Young Pope is an Italian-French-Spanish-American drama television series co-produced by HBO, Sky Atlantic, Canal+, and Wild Bunch TV. The series was created and directed by Paolo Sorrentino, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Stefano Rulli and Umberto Contarello. Jude Law stars as Lenny Belardo / Pope Pius XIII, a fictional American Cardinal who is elected Pope at the age of 47. The series follows Belardo as he attempts to reconcile his progressive and conservative beliefs while dealing with the challenges and politics of the Vatican. In the ninth episode of the first season, titled "1.09", Belardo must decide whether to accept a diplomatic mission to the Middle East or to stay in Rome and deal with the ongoing crisis within the Vatican. The episode will air on HBO on October 1, 2016.
