April 04, 2013 09:04:18It's official; Jimmy Fallon will take over the reins of "The Tonight Show". Following weeks of speculation about the transition, NBC finally announced on Wednesday, April 3 that Fallon would replace Jay Leno at 11:35 P.M. beginning spring 2014.
"We are purposefully making this change when Jay is #1, just as Jay replaced Johnny Carson when he was #1," said Steve Burke, Chief Executive Officer of NBCUniversal. "Jimmy Fallon is a unique talent and this is his time. I'm thrilled he will become the sixth host of 'The Tonight Show' at exactly the right moment, in conjunction with our coverage of next year's Winter Olympic Games from Sochi, Russia."

According to various sites, the new contract includes a point that says he will replace Jay Leno as the host of "The Tonight Show" some time in the future.
However, it remains unclear when the switch will take place. Words were, some NBC executives wanted to launch Fallon-hosted "Tonight Show" in February 2014 to take advantage of the promotional platform of the 2014 Winter Olympics, but some others including "Late Night" executive producer Lorne Michaels didn't want to rush the transition.

"According to several reports, scientists say they are getting closer and closer to being able to do 'Jurassic Park'-style cloning of extinct species," Leno told his audience. "Imagine that.
