James Purefoy Plays Coy on 'The Following' Fiery Season Finale

It was a deadly finale on "The Following" with the fate of at least one key character hanging in the balance. After [SPOILER ALERT!] a showdown between former FBI Agent Ryan Hardy and his nemesis Joe Carroll, the serial killer was engulfed in flames. While reports after the incident confirmed Joe's death, it's still debatable whether the character has really bitten the dust considering the show's main premise.

At TV Academy screening in North Hollywood on Monday, April 29, James Purefoy had to answer the burning question. Asked whether he has signed up to return to season 2, which would reveal his character's fate, he coyly replied, "I believe so, but that's not a guarantee."

Kevin Bacon accidentally revealed a big twist in the most recent episode of "The Following". Realizing that he spoiled those who haven't had a chance to watch the latest outing titled "The Curse", especially fans overseas, the actor quickly issued an apology.

"To all the fans abroad and late watchers I'm truly sorry I retweeted a spoiler. I just wasn't thinking. Won't happen again. #MyBad," he tweeted Tuesday, April 9. The Ryan Hardy of the FOX thriller also posted a Vine video in which he said "my bad" three times.

FOX Renews 'The Following', 'New Girl', 'Mindy Project' and 'Raising Hope'

FOX has given new season orders to its four shows, "The Following", "New Girl", "The Mindy Project" and "Raising Hope". The freshman serial killer thriller starring Kevin Bacon will return for a second season consisting of 15 new episodes.

"From the very beginning, we felt Kevin Williamson and Marcos Siega had created a high-quality, edge-of-your-seat drama that could break from the pack, and it is exciting to see the audience responding," says Kevin Reilly, FOX's Chairman of Entertainment.

Fox Defends Violence in Kevin Bacon's 'The Following'

Fox chairman Kevin Reilly firmly stated that the network does not glorify violence in its new series, "The Following". The Fox boss said the team will not change or tone down the content of the Kevin Williamson-directed series despite recent real-life tragedies like the Newtown shooting. The serial-killer thriller has gained instant notoriety for its gruesome scenes and violent storyline.

"I think in general there have been more violent shows on TV," Reilly said at this year's Television Critics Association press tour. "Clearly there is appetite, people like these things... [but] this show adheres to broadcast standards."

Hyping up the upcoming premiere of "The Following", FOX has released a new promo for the rookie series. While it doesn't include footage from the show, the video does highlight the storyline in which a former FBI agent will stop at nothing in his pursuit of a diabolical serial killer.

Having captured the notorious criminal, Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), years ago, former agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) is contacted by FBI when Carroll escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree. Using special technology, Carroll is creating a cult of serial killers.
