Reagan walks into Ava's office with exciting news. She just booked singer Stevie Nicks to be a guest on The Ava Show. "You're my hero!" Ava screams as they jump up and down in excitement. Suddenly they realize Julian has snuck into the office and is jumping with them. "I thought it was a hug party," he says as they push him away. Julian has brought a gift for Ava, "a baby dog." He was googling Ava for inspirational quotes and/or nipple slips when he saw her as a child with a dog, so he thought he would try to recreate that memory. He's already named the dog Avian, a combination of both their names, and says they can take care of it together.

Chris is on fire as he scores three goals for his old-timers league ice hockey game. He loves to play but hates how it's called the old timers league; it just means you have to be over 30 to play. "Look out, it's the young'ens from the beer league," Chris says as a team of 20-somethings walk past. Surprisingly, one of the young players compliments Chris on his slap shot; he tells Chris he's still got the heat and they are in need of a killer right wing for their next game. Without missing a beat, Chris leaves the old-timers behind and joins the beer league.

Chris brags to Reagan on how the 20 year olds begged him to be on their team, but Reagan is worried that he won't be able to keep up. He's way over 30, and he pulled a muscle pulling off his shirt the other night. Chris tells her not to worry; he'll play and be fine. Then from across the room, Reagan and Chris watch as Amy happily walks by on her own. They can't believe she's growing up so fast. Then Reagan realizes Amy is wearing slippy socks and berates Chris for not putting her in grippy socks like she told him. Chris tells Reagan not to overreact as she is prone to do and just let Amy learn for herself. Reagan takes offense that she is an overreacter and soon overreacts to Chris' criticism of her motherly instincts.

Ava arrives late for work looking completely disheveled. Avian kept her up all night with his constant whimpering. She even tried sleeping in the doggy bed to help calm him down, but it just wouldn't stop. Reagan tells Ava that Stevie Nicks wants to meet with both of them to talk about the interview, and Reagan is going to pitch that the two of them do a song together on camera... and if they want to bring Reagan onstage to make it a trio, she'll be more than happy to oblige. Julian walks in to take Avian for the day, but Ava asks him to take Avian away for good. She can't have a dog; it's too much responsibility. Julian nods in understanding and tells her that he'll take care of it.

Later that night, Ava talks to Missy about how much she hated Avian, but soon her stories of annoyance turn into stories of laughter as she remembers the dog's cute quirks. She suddenly realizes she needs Avian in her life and rushes over to Julian's club to get him back. Meanwhile, Chris' body is in pain from playing hokey with the 20 year olds. He hides in the bathroom and rubs ointment over his body, trying to be sly so Reagan doesn't catch him. Then Reagan finds Chris and throws him on the bed; she's in the mood to get frisky. As Reagan jumps on top, Chris desperately tries to pass off his tears of pain as screams of joy.

Reagan and Ava meet with Stevie Nicks and gush over how they're huge fans. They then both apologize for bringing Amy and Avian along for the meeting; Chris' back is out, and Ava can't bear to have her dog left alone. Soon Amy and Avian start crying and whimpering loudly to the dismay of their parents until Stevie shushes them herself and they immediately fall silent. Stevie tells Reagan and Ava that they should postpone the meeting until their babies are happier, and as she walks out of the room, all the candles blow out in a mystical gust of wind that seems to follow her.

Ava meets with Julian and is worried that Avian has a heart murmur. She has bonded with the dog but has become so neurotic about Avian's health that it has given the dog stress IBS, which in turn has given her stress IBS. "It's like a loop," Julian says, "a poop loop." Ava reluctantly admits that she's going to have to let Avian go in order to save both of them.

Reagan arrives home after making a fool of herself with Stevie Nicks to find that Chris left the house to play hockey. She's irate that he went even though his body can't stand the abuse. She arrives at the hockey rink and pulls Chris out of the game like an angry mother. "Game called on the account of marriage!" Chris yells out to his teammates as he reluctantly leaves the rink. Then as he leaves his teammates' earshot, he gratefully thanks Reagan for pulling him. "Thank you so much, babe. Those guys are so fast and they don't feel any fear," Chris says to Reagan as his body finally breaks down.

Reagan and Chris relax in their backyard watching Amy play when Chris thanks Reagan for the advice she gave him about embracing the new phase in his life. Now he thinks Reagan needs to embrace Amy's new phase and let her be able to walk around and make mistakes without her mother hovering over. He knows it's challenging and scary, but it's for the best. In a montage to music from Stevie Nicks, we see everyone slowly accept the new phase in their lives. Ava reluctantly lets Avian play at a dog park with larger dogs; Chris happily plays hockey with the old timers' league, and Reagan takes a step back from hovering to let Amy make discoveries on her own.

Reagan watches Ava and Stevie Nicks walk off The Ava Show stage after sharing a beautiful duet together. Reagan then cautiously looks around to make sure no one is watching and, in a fantastic daydream, grabs the microphone and sings a duet of "Edge of Seventeen" with Stevie. In the fantasy, Reagan and Stevie are dressed in full garb with spotlight and wind following their every move. It's a magical moment until Reagan is thrown out of the dream and back into reality by Missy. Reagan quickly tries to cover her embarrassment by pretending she was doing a microphone check for the sound department.
