Samantha and Steven are chatting in the kitchen at Bloom Catering when Lizzy tells Samantha she has visitor, Jennifer Anthony, a former Yale classmate. Jennifer tells Samantha that she's throwing a little party to celebrate the new job she just landed as a local news anchor. When Jennifer learned that Samantha had become a "cook" in Los Angeles, she knew she had to hire her. Samantha politely informs Jennifer that she's in fact a chef and catering company owner, not a cook. Steven jumps into the conversation to brag about his wife's culinary brilliance. Jennifer's not surprised. Samantha was a star journalism student back at Yale, always the class favorite of their professor. Samantha leaves Lizzy to take care of Jennifer's order while she and Steven head off to a meeting with Shaw.

Samantha, Steven and Leo meet Shaw in his hotel room to receive their new assignment. The CIA recently captured Victor Guzman, one of the most elusive hit men in the world. Guzman has admitted that Mikhail Ivanov recently contracted him to assassinate the President-Elect of Peru, Alberto Loya. However it's unclear who hired Mikhail to find a hit man to kill Loya. That person could be anyone, even Loya's closest advisor. It's the team's assignment to travel to Peru to ensure the livelihood of President-Elect Loya.

Back at home, Samantha examines a bracelet given to her by Professor Shilling, her journalism professor from Yale that Jennifer mentioned earlier. Steven asks Samantha about her relationship with Schilling. It's evident that Shilling was a man Samantha greatly respected. As they pack for Peru, Samantha talks through their strategy and agenda upon arrival. The following morning, Samantha attends the press event for President-Elect Loya, going undercover as Edna Karter, one of the many journalists at the event to interview Loya. As she waits for her interview, she meets a fellow journalist named Matthew Hunt. Samantha probes Hunt to see if he knows of any enemies the President-Elect might have. Hunt tells Samantha that there's always an enemy; you just have to be the first to find him or her.

Samantha sits down with Loya, whose security guard remains at his side. Leo stages a security debacle at the entrance to the event, and Loya excuses the guard to help. Samantha informs Loya of the impeding threat on his life. He promptly shuts her down. Samantha remains persistent in her warnings for his safety, but Loya won't budge. He refuses to cancel his upcoming appearances - he's not a coward! When Loya asks why Samantha feels the need to save him so badly, she claims it's because she knows he's a good man. He reminds her of another good man she used to know. He tells her she too reminds him of someone: his stubborn five-year-old daughter.

When Loya's security guard returns, he informs Samantha that the interview is over. Samantha lets the team know that Loya doesn't know anything. Leo suggests he stay in Lima to try to infiltrate Loya's inner circle. Steven proposes that he and Samantha make a trip to Rio De Janeiro. Ivanov owns a nightclub there, and if they put the word out that a new assassin is in town and that assassin is Steven, Ivanov might be inclined to hire him. Once they arrive in Rio, Steven and Samantha immediately start surveillance. They find Ivanov in his office with a woman. He puts a handheld computer in a biometric safe. Luckily, their camera angle allows them to see the passcode that goes along with his fingerprint to open the safe. They need that computer.

Hoyt is at the club looking after Ivanov, while Samantha assumes the identity of a cocktail waitress. When she walks by Ivanov, he calls her over. Samantha manages to convince him that she's new to the club. She grabs his glassware, which allows her to access his fingerprints. After transferring the fingerprints, Samantha opens the safe to retrieve the computer and download its contents. Hoyt alerts Samantha that Ivanov is on the move. When he reaches his office, Steven is waiting for him. Steven presents Ivanov with Guzman's wallet and badge to suggest that he's killed Guzman to ensure an opening for himself in the Loya assassination plot. As Steven told Samantha, the best way to stop an assassination is to be the assassin.

Hoyt downloads images from the handheld computer Samantha took from Ivanov's office. The next day, Steven sits at a café waiting to hear from Ivanov. A waiter brings over a platter of tea and a note. Steven is to return to the same spot in eight hours when he'll have to kill someone, to prove his ability and dedication to Ivanov. Back at the hotel, Hoyt pulls up information on Steven's target, Martine Redondo, a 45-year-old shoe store owner. Martine used to go by the name Miguel Silva, and was previously Ivanov's accountant.

Hoyt and Samantha find Redondo and create a distraction on the street. Samantha plays the part of a lost tourist looking for the central terminal. Redondo walks Samantha to the location. As a thank-you, she offers to buy him a drink and he accepts. Steven waits outside for Redondo to leave. When he does, Steven walks past him and shoots him. Redondo is down. When paramedics arrive, they call it. Redondo is dead. They cover his body and load it into the ambulance. Ivanov watches from across the street.

Steven waits to hear from Ivanov. A young girl approaches Steven and hands him a phone. Ivanov is on the other end. Steven tells Ivanov he's done proving himself. Ivanov tells Steven to be in Lima on Saturday for the job. Back in the ambulance, Samantha, as a paramedic, says they're clear. The body sits up. It's not Redondo, its Leo. Leo wore a mask to look like Redondo, and took a fake bullet from Steven.

The team returns to Lima. Dressed to the nines, Samantha gets ready for a party at the Presidential palace. Leo informs Steven and Samantha that while they were in Rio, Leo hooked up with a beautiful woman from Loya's administration. Leo shares the content of the email he just received from her, which includes Loya's inauguration speech. Loya plans to announce that he'll be giving all oil pipeline usage rights to a Peruvian company, kicking out the current controlling company, Despina. While Samantha heads to the party, Leo and Steven work the oil pipeline angle. If Loya succeeds, the current controlling company's stock value will plummet. The person who hired Ivanov must work for Despina.

Excusing herself from a conversation with fellow journalist Matthew Hunt, Samantha takes a call from Lizzy. While talking to Lizzy, Samantha overhears one of Loya's security guards disclose that he's secure in the chapel. Samantha seizes the opportunity to speak to Loya. When she arrives at the chapel, she watches as Loya kisses his daughter goodnight. Just as Samantha enters the chapel, one of Loya's guards puts a gun to her head. Loya sees this and asks the guard to step down. Samantha tells Loya that the assassination plot is tied to the pipeline. Just as Samantha is about to tell Loya that she's not actually a reporter, Loya's head of security Cortez steps in. He escorts Samantha out, warning that if she attends the inauguration the following day, she'll be arrested.

Back in Rio de Janeiro, a man goes to the morgue to finish the cleanup on Redondo's body. The problem is that the body at the morgue isn't Redondo. Ivanov is put in a van, defending his choice of assassin. Whoever hired Ivanov isn't happy with this choice, and Ivanov is murdered. Hoyt and Samantha are outside the square where the inauguration is about to take place in a van. Hoyt has discovered that Cortez, Loya's head of security, used to be the head of security at Despina. Samantha rushes out of the van to warn Loya. Hoyt can't stop her. Steven gets into place. Leo searches the crowd for additional sharpshooters.

When Steven gets a call from a new contact, Hoyt records it and tries to locate its origin. Steven rules out Cortez - he watched Cortez while he was on the call and it wasn't him on the other end. Hoyt then tells Steven that Samantha left the van. She didn't want to let another good man die, so she's gone to warn Loya about Cortez. Steven tells Leo to go look for Samantha before she gets herself killed. Samantha has no luck getting to Cortez or Loya. The reporter, Matthew Hunt, offers to help her. Just as she walks away with him, Hoyt matches Hunt's picture. Hunt is part of the family that owns Despina Oil. He's the one behind the assassination attempt.

Hunt calls Steven and tells him to kill Loya when he says he's taking Peru back in his inauguration speech. If Steven doesn't kill Loya, like he did with Redondo in Rio, Hunt will kill Samantha. Hoyt finally locates Hunt. Steven gets a visual of him in the southwest tower of the square. Leo rushes to the tower. Steven takes a shot at Hunt, hitting him in the arm. After his speech, Loya spots Samantha in the crowd and thanks her. Something tells him he's alive because of her.

Steven and Samantha meet with Shaw back in Los Angeles. When they return to Bloom Catering, they find Lizzy hanging out with Leo. Then, back at home, Steven asks Samantha what happened in Lima, but she reminds him that they don't talk about the past. Then she opens up about why she left the agency. Professor Shilling recruited her into the agency and left Yale to train her in the field. He died five years ago and Samantha blames herself for his death.
