The gang visit a monastery in the hope that Tiger's friend, Brother Angelico, will be able to help them find a route to the Land of the Dead.
Gunnar wants no part of this mission, believing the living shouldn't venture to the Land of the Dead. He does some silk trading instead and falls for Lara, the widow of the island's tailor. She gives him her handkerchief and tells him her husband was killed by the Fiend, a beast that comes with the wind. Father La Stessa, overcome with jealousy after spying on them kissing, accuses Gunnar of being the Fiend and sentences him to death.
Sinbad bravely volunteers to find the real Fiend in order to prove that his friend is innocent. Anwar and Rina start some detective work about the Fiend's previous victims, while Sinbad uses Tiger's excellent tracking skills to get on the trail of the Fiend.
Meanwhile, we discover that Taryn is at the monastery, undercover as the nun charged with looking after the elderly Brother Angelico. She tries to persuade him to reveal the way to the Land of the Dead, and when he refuses, she kills him.
Sinbad and friends make a shock discovery - the Fiend is none other than friendly, mild-mannered tavern landlord, Philippe. But there is more to come. Philippe cannot help his secret beastly nature and doesn't want to kill. But he has been manipulated into murdering selected targets by Father La Stessa.
Philippe has been given the scent of Gunnar, and when darkness falls and he turns into the Fiend, he sets off in pursuit of his quarry. Sinbad and friends rescue Gunnar in the nick of time.
Tiger finally gets to see the map to the Land of the Dead that Brother Angelico had left hidden in plain sight. But in a final twist, Taryn possesses Tiger's body and thus stows away on the Providence.
