Fred shows Marty the bone he found in his family's factory. He says his mother knows nothing about the men that were killed 80 some years ago. Fred believes that if Marty digs into the case, only the people he cares about will get hurt-the Langstons and Maggie.

Elaine keeps a depressed and heavily-drinking Barbara company at the bar. She makes a call to Maggie to give her the scoop. She wants her to give her mom a chance. Shots are ordered for the table. Elaine exits leaving mother and daughter alone to chat. Barbara opens up. Maggie does, too.

Maggie apologizes for the pressure she's put on Barbara since she returned. A chance to start anew is put on the table. A short time later, Barbara shows up at Fred's place with a bottle. The two of them share a passionate kiss and spend the night together.

The next morning, Fred looks through a box containing old photos. One picture is from a day that he told Barbara that he'd always love her. There's a knock on the front door. It's Margaret. She masks her extreme displeasure at what she sees when Fred opens the door with Barbara behind him.

Marty tells Margaret that he knows about the bones under the factory. He thinks she's the one who dumped them in the river. The men who were killed over and over eventually stopped returning. The question is... Why?

Maggie realizes that Marty is in cahoots with the government now. The two of them get into a shouting match. Later, Maggie learns that her mother spent the night at her father's place. Margaret is the one who breaks the news in her own puppet master way. As for Fred, he's very happy even though he knows things can't be the way they were. Maggie later tells her grandmother that they shouldn't interfere.

Tom's new church is open for business with just a couple dozen members in attendance. He arrives home to find that Rachael isn't waking up. She has the sickness. Marty places a call to his government contact. The Elegant Woman says she has no useful information to give him at this time. Marty knows she's lying.

Margaret pays a visit to Barbara. They take a seat on a bench. Margaret says so many people are angry at Barbara. The reason she went to Fred is because she feels ashamed. She tells Barbara that Jacob drowned in that river because of her. Margaret encourages her to just "let go." Elaine sees the two women talking in the distance, but when she gets closer, only Margaret is on the bench. Elsewhere, Carl covers his ears as his brother, Mikey, gets sicker and sicker. Soon he disappears, too.

When Maggie learns that Mikey has disappeared, she calls Marty, who begins coughing up blood. Elaine shows up at the doctor's office. She tells Maggie that she saw her mom in the park. Then she disappeared. The vials of blood for Mikey and Barbara are empty. They are both gone. Maggie returns to an empty home to find a note from Marty. It says he's looking for answers. Marty drives into the night. He pulls over when he gets too sick to go on. He shakes violently in the backseat of his car.
