It's night, and the entrance to Cloisters Park is choked with emergency vehicles and cops trying to keep a crowd of mostly Dominican residents from exploding. A dead girl has been found in the park, and the crowd wants to know if it was local teen Marta Suroz, who recently went missing. Zoe, a young woman in the crowd, accuses the police of neglecting to look for Marta until it was too late. Duffy remarks that Evrard's old neighborhood doesn't seem too happy to see them. That's when TV reporter Ron O'Brien appears on the scene. When the guys start making fun of him, Jane walks up for a hug and a kiss. Evrard offers to suss the crowd for anyone helpful, then introduces Jane to park manager Ben Lyons, who will escort the detectives to the body.

The victim, Marta, has been strangled, had her throat cut from ear to ear and has been posed naked with fresh flowers arranged over strategic sections of her anatomy. It's not long before the detectives are called back to the park entrance to help deal with the crowd. Now Zoe has hold of Junot Suroz, Marta's father, and is demanding to be let into the park. Junot tries to break through the line, and Zoe goes after him, so a scuffle begins. Duffy gets Junot in a chokehold and is just threatening to cuff him when a tomato hits him in the face. Then a witchy-woman starts speaking in Spanish and flicking a tree branch in Duffy's direction. Evrard explains that she just put a curse on Duffy.

Later, Jane meets with medical examiner Iris Rendell to learn that Marta's throat was slashed with something that wasn't very sharp, definitely serrated. Bruises indicate she was strangled while she still had blood in her, and her vocal cords were hacked out. Marta's mother Emilia reports that everyone loved Marta; she didn't have a boyfriend, but she did have a moonstone ring that her dad gave her, which is missing. She explains that her husband isn't going to show up. He's not an easy man, and he doesn't have God in his heart. He doesn't believe Marta's in heaven, and he's just too angry to deal.

Duffy's interrogation of a combative Zoe isn't going well. She doesn't want to tell him anything - why should she, when the cops only work when the cameras are on? Having had enough, Evrard smacks the table and tells Zoe to cut it out. If she knows something that will help catch whoever killed her friend, she needs to spit it out. Zoe explains that a local gang, the LTDs, aka La Tropa Doma, beat a guy into a coma last month, and Marta saw it happen. She was going to tell the cops, but she told her stepdad, Suroz, for sure. Afterwards, Evrard tells Jane and Duffy that if the LTDs wanted Marta dead, she'd be dead, but posing her naked with flowers isn't their MO. Duffy likes Suroz for the murder, who's now missing. When Duffy burns himself on hot coffee, Evrard thinks it's the curse.

Jane sends Evrard and Duffy to find Suroz, then heads to Sweeney's office to ask for men to sweep the park. Sweeney signs off, telling her to hurry up already; his phones have been ringing off the hook, and he's catching a lot of flak. Later, Jane stops by her dad's house to make a date for his 45th wedding anniversary, which is coming up on Friday. The phone rings, and the news isn't good. Sweeney's pulling the men he gave Jane for the park sweep. He's got to prioritize now that he has a missing NYU student - who, Jane points out, is pretty, rich and white. Sweeney's making the Dominicans point for them! When a brown girl goes missing, no one cares. Sweeney remarks that Jane's girl is dead, his is alive, and he's got a finite number of guys. Besides, he already brought up Jane's point, and now here they are.

It's night when Jane crosses One Police Plaza to visit Deputy Chief of Patrol Dan Costello, the guy her squad has been accusing her of sleeping with to get promoted. Costello can't imagine why she's there and seems slightly scared. He doesn't really want to talk about giving Jane some men to sweep the park; he's more interested in the civilian Jane's now living with. There's clearly still some heat and tension between these two, and it doesn't take long for Jane to get her men. Later that night, a bunch of squad cars pull up to the park. Evrard remarks that generosity is quite unlike Costello. Jane promises all she did was ask. It's not long before the uniformed cops approach the basketball court, and pretty much every one of the players starts running.

Evrard and Duffy stop by the Suroz family restaurant to interview Emilia. Her husband has been missing since yesterday. She doesn't know where he went, but she knows Marta's death is destroying him. Evrard asks her for a list of places Suroz might go, then tells Duffy he got him a bruja - a priestess to remove his curse. She's right around the corner, and it will only take half an hour. Back at the park, Jane finds another pile of flowers, just as a homeless guy named Duke approaches, asking if she saw the white light. The padiddle? Jane answers his question with a question: "Who here likes pizza?" Meanwhile, Augie and Calderon oversee a parade of loiterers picked up during the park sweep. When someone starts running, Calderon claims he pulled a hamstring, so he sends a reluctant Augie to chase after a runner.

The runner, whom we'll call Ivan, rounds a corner when Duffy spies him across the street and starts yelling. Ivan draws a gun, but when Duffy pulls his, Ivan tosses his gun onto the pavement. It discharges, hitting a window, mere inches from Duffy's head. Then the kid runs into a storefront church calling for sanctuary. Duffy doesn't care - he smacks the kid in the head and wrestles him out the door, blessing himself with holy water on the way. After Ivan's loaded into the van, Augie and Evrard point out that Duffy's bleeding. Is he going to see the bruja now? Duffy insists he's not cursed, he's blessed. Ivan missed. That's when something catches his eye - a dumpster full of cut flowers behind the church.

Back at the precinct, Ivan, a member of the LTDs, tells Jane he didn't shoot anyone. Nevertheless, with the rest of his rap sheet, they're going to string him up for attempted murder, which Jane points out, means life in prison. So what about Marta? Ivan denies anything to do with Marta; the LTDs are businessmen, and the park is like their company. When Evrard calls Ivan a clown, Ivan accuses him of being too lame to cut it in a gang. Ivan admits that Marta did see some people - he's not going to say who - and they did want to kill her, but they were told not to. Marta was hot, and Ivan was looking to get some - they can ask his boys. Meanwhile, Calderon has his hands full, trying to distribute pizza to the mob of homeless people wandering through the bullpen like an ocean.

Sweeney calls Jane into his office to report that the coed has been found - in a hotel with her boyfriend. So Jane would have had her men for the park sweep after all. Sweeney's not too happy that Jane went over his head to Costello. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, right? Jane apologizes then proceeds to the squad room to find an angry Duffy. On TV, a newscaster reports that the cops are looking at Suroz. They have a leak! Who could it be? Duffy hopes Jane and her buddy O'Brien are proud of themselves. Jane insists that O'Brien would never do such a thing to any cop. It's not long before Jane busts into Costello's office and hangs up his phone mid-call. He teasingly explains that he needed a favor, and he doesn't make the rules of the world.

Back at the squad, Evrard and Duffy are joking around when he realizes Duffy's wearing a bulletproof vest - aha! Duffy does think he's cursed! Duffy's just denying it when Suroz runs into the squad room and punches him square in the eye. In a few minutes, Suroz is handcuffed to a table in interrogation, telling Jane that he's been at a whole lotta churches looking for God. Jane explains that she's seen a lot of people in his situation, and none of them react like Suroz. What, does Jane want tears? Suroz explains that the first word Marta ever said was his name, then bangs his head on the table until he is crying. In another room, Augie finds Duke, the homeless guy, shaking with DTs and asking if Marta got a proper burial. Augie says no, then asks about the flowers. Duke admits he put the flowers on Marta, because she was dumped like garbage.

Jane charges into Sweeney's office asking for a bottle to take the edge off Duke's DTs. Within minutes, she's downing a shot along with Duke, who starts feeling better. He doesn't know how long Marta was lying in the park before he found her, but he saw the padiddle - a white light that moves around in the dark - the night before. Jane leaves Duke with Augie and the bottle. Afterwards, Evrard tells Jane that park manager Lyons is the only full-time park employee, but sometimes the city hires part-timers to clean up the park during summers. Evrard suggests Jane head to the park; he'd better stay with Duffy, in case there's a meteor shower or plague. Lyons explains that he's got a list of part-time employees in his computer, but he has to lock the gates at sunset. Does Jane want to come along?

Now drunk, Augie explains to Duffy that he's sure Duke knows something, even if he can't articulate it or be a credible witness in court. When Augie mentions the padiddle, Sweeney explains that a padiddle is a car with one headlight. Meanwhile, Jane is getting into Lyons' truck, which has only one working headlight. After locking up, Jane calls Duffy, who tells her about the padiddle. Jane immediately makes the connection. If Lyons dumped Marta's body, they need to search his truck. Sweeney sends Duffy to search the truck, telling Jane to keep Lyons busy. Jane tells Lyons they're about to arrest Suroz and starts gossiping, just as Duffy and Augie uncover a pile of serrated tools in the back of Lyons' truck. That's when Lyons catches on to what they're doing and makes a run for it. Jane yells, and the chase is on.

As the other detectives fall behind, Evrard picks up speed and closes the gap. After taking Lyons down, Evrard explains that this is his neighborhood. If he were a different man, he'd turn Lyons over to his neighbors. After it's all over, Jane notices that Duffy ripped his pants, exposing his Mets underpants. Everyone has a good laugh. Later, Jane checks in with Sweeney. Duffy got blood out of the truck's cab that matches Marta's, even though the saw is clean. Calderon found a box in Lyons' office containing a pile of jewelry, including Marta's moonstone ring. Later, Jane returns the ring to Emilia and Suroz, then pulls out the rest of the jewelry, which they tell her, doesn't belong to Marta.

Jane dumps the jewelry on a table in front of Lyons. There are four items that don't belong to Marta, and since '98, there have been five other girls that went missing in the park. Jane goes to work on Lyons, asking if he cut out all their vocal cords. And why did he want Marta to be found and not the others? ADA Casey Rosenfeld steps in to take Lyons to booking, and he behaves as if Jane isn't there, asking for his blood pressure prescription. Disgusted, Jane leaves, promising it's not over. Later that night, Evrard finally convinces Duffy to visit the bruja. She picks up a bottle of rum, takes a big swig and spits in Duffy's face several times. Evrard explains it's a blessing, and Duffy's going to want to try and act grateful.

Jane's trying to leave the precinct when she gets a call from Costello. Jane asks if they're going to be doing "this" now, just because she had to ask him for something important. Costello doesn't really buy that Jane had to, then asks her about Matt in a disparaging way. Jane claims she has to go, but Costello thinks she's really going to keep working because, that way, there's a chance Matt will be asleep when she gets home. Claiming that's not why, Jane hangs up and proceeds to her dad's for a toast to his anniversary and everlasting love. And no, he's not going to smoke that cigar.
