Laura Diamond (Debra Messing) and Jake Broderick (Josh Lucas) inspect an alley, where a witness describes a van speeding off after dumping a pregnant Nigerian woman's body. The victim, D.J. Kano, doesn't make it, but her baby survives. After taking down witness Susan's contact info, the team traces D.J.'s steps to an apartment where another Nigerian woman is being held captive. She explains that she and D.J. smuggled gems for a Nigerian syndicate, so Laura deduces D.J. stole a gem and escaped the apartment. But why?
Following directions off a note found in D.J.'s suitcase, Jake and Laura visit a penthouse apartment to find AmBaby, an illegal maternity tourism ward for wealthy foreigners who want their babies born on American soil for citizenship. D.J. must have stolen a gem so she could afford a good future for her child. Jake goes undercover to nab the AmBaby boss, a realtor who locates apartments for his wards. The realtor shares the email address of an AmBaby employee he contacted on the night of D.J.'s death - and it matches the one given by crime scene witness Susan. At the station, Susan finds it hard to admit she was transporting D.J. After D.J. fell and hit her head, Susan simply left her for dead on the curb. That night after family dinner, Jake pulls out a doctor's note confirming his heart is in good shape. A deal's a deal, so with a sigh, Laura agrees to a Saturday night date.
