Jake and Annie have just returned from a romantic sixth anniversary vacation to Mexico - so romantic, in fact, Annie can't believe Jake didn't propose during the trip. She tries to play it cool, but when Jake announces he's exhausted and is going to bed, Annie can't help but have a total freakout about the state of their relationship.

As she paces around the house, hunting for booze and yelling about how she can't believe he hasn't proposed, Jake is waiting on bended knee to pop the question. Only, Annie is too busy insulting their friends one by one, calling Jake's friends "garbage people" and his mom a bitch, to notice she's missing the moment she's been waiting for.

Finally, Annie turns around and an exasperated Jake half-heartedly asks her to marry him... and then tells everyone to come out from their hiding spots. All the people Annie has just insulted are there, including, of course, Jake's mom. A shocked Annie furiously apologizes to her loved ones, trying to make amends as they storm out of her apartment. Even Annie's two dads, Kevin 1 and Kevin 2, walk out, with Jake right behind them. Before he leaves, Jake decides the engagement doesn't count - this is not the story he wants to tell for the next 60 years, so he's going to wait a few days and try again.

Devastated and alone, Annie walks into her bedroom to find rose petals scattered across the bed and a bottle of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries ready for a toast. She flashes back to six years earlier and the equally un-romantic way she and Jake met...

Annie is sitting on a bench outside a Mexican restaurant when Jake, eating nachos at a nearby table, tries to get her attention. She tells him off, accusing him of eating at a restaurant that opposes gay marriage, and encourages him to enjoy his "hate nachos." Jake apologizes and throws them away, just as a waitress walks over with Annie's nachos to-go order. Turns out Annie is a regular... and a terrible person.

Back in the present day, Annie is lying on the bed, binging on chocolate-covered strawberries and chugging champagne from the bottle, when she's startled by her friend Kay popping out of the closet. Apparently, Kay missed the whole surprise and thought interrupting her friend's meltdown was her cue to leave.

The next day, Annie goes to hot yoga with her friend Dennah. Annie is absolutely awful at hot yoga, but uses the session to come up with a plan to do something splashy to make everyone forget what happened the day before. She decides she'll propose to Jake!

Annie shows up at Jake's office, armed with roses, music and a white dress. She apologizes to Jake in front of all his coworkers, begging him to forget the past few days since they came back from their Mexico trip and announcing a do-over engagement party that night... which no one at the office is invited to. She gets down on one knee and proposes, and an embarrassed Jake says yes.

Their joy is short-lived, however, as Jake's boss interrupts the moment to fire Jake, who had lied and said his dad was in the hospital when he was actually in Mexico. Needless to say, this is not the re-do story Annie had hoped for.

That night, an unemployed Jake drowns his sorrows in a plate of nachos at the Mexican restaurant instead of going to the engagement party. He wonders if the fact that everything has gone wrong is a sign he and Annie shouldn't get married, and then flashes back to five years earlier...

Jake, Annie and their friends are at a karaoke bar. Annie gets up to sing "I Will Always Love You," which she dedicates to Jake, but then realizes it sounds like she was saying "I love you," which they haven't said to each other yet. When she tries to awkwardly backtrack, Jake gets up and tells her he loves her too.

Present-day Jake realizes none of their stories are particularly good and that Annie is kind of crazy, but he loves her and wants to marry her. Just then, Annie calls him and asks if all the botched proposals are a sign they shouldn't be together. That's when they realize neither of them is at their engagement party - they are both at the Mexican restaurant! This is the real sign that trumps all the other signs, and Jake once again gets down on one knee and proposes, right there in the restaurant.

Meanwhile, Jake and Annie's friends and family have been waiting at their second ruined engagement party, which the couple didn't even bother to show up to. As everyone leaves, Jake and Annie rush over and announce they're engaged for real this time and are ready to celebrate. But their friends are not - they're over rejoicing in Jake and Annie's dysfunctional love and just want to go home. It doesn't hurt that Annie insulted most of them during the first ruined engagement. Annie apologizes and invites everyone upstairs to have a drink - decidedly NOT in celebration of the engagement.
