After explaining that his dementia patient John Doe recognizes him from childhood as "William," Toby enlists Ray's help. Ray recognizes the old man as Frank Cardea, the man who saved Toby's life, and brought him to Ray, instructing "not to let them find him." Toby reads Frank's mind: Frank pulled Toby out of a river when he was a kid, saving his life. Why didn't he come to find Toby sooner?

Frank claims that Maya sent him, and Toby gets a flash -- his mother is alive! Toby flips out, pressing for more information, but Frank's tapped out. Ray pulls Toby away, insisting that Frank needs to rest and let his brain heal. Toby is rocked with a new kind of distress beacon, hitting him out of nowhere: a man crashes his car during a snow storm.

Ray advises Toby to go home and get some rest, but he refuses to leave Frank. When Olivia wants to know what's happening, Ray tells her she'll have to ask Toby. Toby tells Olivia that if he can get through to Frank, he'll be able to find his mother. Does she have a magic wand to restore Frank's memory? Olivia promises to search for any new, experimental medications and/or techniques.

Toby returns to his loft with Oz to call every hotel in the city in hopes that Frank might have been staying in one of them. Oz doesn't think this is the greatest plan, but Toby doesn't know what else to do, since Frank has no ID. As for the car crash flash, Toby doesn't recognize the man driving the car.

Unbeknownst to Toby, the man from his flash visits Frank. Frank doesn't recognize the guy, but gets a bad feeling about him. When Olivia suggests that the man may be able to help Toby, Frank becomes upset, so Olivia backs off, and the man refuses to tell her his name. Claiming he has a medical emergency, Toby takes the day off work, leaving Oz to ride with Ryder.

Toby proceeds to the hospital to try to jog Frank's memory. Together, they flash back to the past, where Toby recognizes the man from his car accident flash. Maya urges Toby to escape through a trap door in the trailer, then tries to protect her newborn from the man, who wants to know where Toby is. Maya claims she doesn't know. Back in the present, Toby reels, falling into Frank's arms.

The man from Toby's flash stops by the station, introducing himself to Ryder as Victor Cloonie. Ryder smells a rat, and refuses to help Cloonie, then asks Oz about him. Oz calls Toby, who's at the university, waiting for Ray to finish a lecture. When Toby and Ray proceed to Ray's office, they discover it's been burgled -- strangely, it's only Toby's file that's missing.

Toby meets Charlie back at the hospital, convinced that Victor Cloonie is after him. As usual, Charlie can't do anything until Cloonie has done something wrong, but she promises to check him out. When Olivia overhears Charlie offering Toby the key to her apartment, where he can lay low until it all blows over, she demands an explanation.

Toby finally tells Olivia everything. Stunned, Olivia maintains that just because Toby can read her mind, it doesn't mean he knows what she's thinking. The couple is just leaning in for a kiss when Oz interrupts. Frank has been repeating the word "Mendoza" over and over. Toby is able to deduce that Frank was staying at the Mendoza Inn.

Toby and Frank proceed to the Mendoza Inn, where they search Frank's room for anything helpful. Frank paid cash and left no address when he checked in, so Toby asks Charlie to come down to make things look more official. When there's a knock at the door, Toby looks through the peephole to recognize Cloonie from his flash. Toby and Frank head out the back as Cloonie kicks in the door to an empty room.

Cloonie overtakes Toby and Frank in the parking lot, claiming that Maya sent him to find Toby. Insisting that he knows where Maya is, Cloonie offers to take Toby to her, but Frank knows he's lying. Charlie drives up, with a mental message for Toby: Cloonie is the guy who burgled Ray's office. When Charlie tells Toby to take Frank and leave, Cloonie pulls a gun. Toby gets in Cloonie's face, and shots are fired. Cloonie drives off as Toby tends to Charlie, who's been shot in the chest.

Olivia rushes Charlie into surgery, leaving Toby to tend to Frank. Frank insists that Cloonie is the one that's been chasing them all along. Toby flashes back to the scene at the trailer, as Cloonie rips the baby from Maya's arms. Becker stalks up, laying into Toby for putting Charlie in danger. If Toby steps one foot inside his department again, there will be hell to pay.

Charlie survives surgery, stable but in critical condition. Toby sits by her bedside. He doesn't need Charlie to forgive him, he just needs her to get better. Ray finds Toby sitting in the hospital hallway, waiting for Frank to be discharged. Toby plans to take Frank home with him, but Ray doesn't think that's the best idea with Cloonie on the loose. Toby is more concerned with his mother's whereabouts. Maybe she was the one driving the car in his flash? Maybe the distress beacon is Maya, calling for help.

Toby returns to the loft with Frank to pack a bag so they can stay at a hotel. Toby reads Frank's mind as he gets a flash of memory. He was supposed to call Maya as soon as he found Toby. Just at that moment, Cloonie breaks in, threatening to shoot Frank if Toby won't come with him. Toby acquiesces, but Frank grabs a fire extinguisher and clocks Frank over the head, causing him to drop his gun.

Frank picks up Cloonie's gun, telling Toby to run. When Toby refuses, Frank seems to turn a corner in his mind. Toby's right; no one's going to run anymore. Frank shoots Cloonie in the heart. Later, Oz meets Toby in the hospital, just as Olivia informs that Cloonie has died. Devastated, Toby runs off -- Cloonie was the only one that knew Maya's whereabouts. Oz grabs Olivia, convinced that Toby will need their help.

Back at the loft, Toby reviews the situation. Frank came to the city to take him to Maya, who's been in a car accident. Toby riffles through Frank's precious book of poetry, surprised to find that some words have been underlined. With Oz's help, Toby pieces together an address for Maya in the town of Auburn.

Oz, Olivia and Toby drive to Maya's house in Auburn, but nobody's been home for days, and none of the local hospitals have admitted any accident victims lately. Convinced that Maya is still "out there," Toby has Oz drive through the town until he recognizes a scene from one of Frank's memories.

Toby has Oz pull over by a bridge, then runs down the embankment to find a car buried in the snow. Toby frantically digs the car out as Oz calls the cops. Toby struggles to open the car's door only to find that the car is empty. Back to square one, Toby keels over in the snow. Where is Maya?
