Darken Rahl plots his return to the land of the living, using a hapless look-alike; the Seeker races to find a stolen scroll, which holds the key to his quest for the Stone of Tears. Walter, a village beggar is captured and trained at the people's palace at a request from the true Darken Rahl due to his uncanny resemblance to the D'Haran leader. When the real Rahl dies, Walter and his friend a D'Haran commander, try to fool the Mord S'ith into giving them Rahl's treasure but are intercepted by Agremon, Darken Rahl's most faithful commander. Rahl instructs him to keep Walter alive for he needed his body to come back to life. Richard and the group track the sister of the dark in order to rescue the scroll she stole but are ambushed, when Zedd is attacked with a dacra, Kahlan confesses a sister to save his life. Richard and the others head towards the Mord S'ith temple where the sister has gone to resurrect Rahl and give him the scroll. Walter is helped by a slave girl whom he likes to escape but run into the seeker who tries to kill him.
