Norman Baker is a bridge architect who has just witnessed the collapse of one of his own designs, the Beaumont Bridge, which spanned the Platte River in Omaha, killing several people in its wake. He enters WITSEC in order to testify against the builder, Karl Hogeland, whom Norman faults with the collapse by hazardously cutting corners in the execution of his design. Hogeland had tried to get Norman to take the rap for bridge collapse in exchange for money and threatened Baker's life if he didn't. But Baker, a man of integrity who has been haunted by the deaths of innocent people, wouldn't take the easy way out. Despite Baker's claim that Hogeland forged vital documents, the builder is found not guilty. Even with the verdict, Baker can't let it go. What if his designs were faulty? More people could lose their lives on other bridges...
