Synopsis

In a semi-empty lecture hall in Cairo, Egypt, Dr. Mohinder Suresh lectures on his theories of advanced human evolution and a virus that strips these people of their abilities. Afterwards, a man named Bob, who can turn metals into gold, offers Suresh a research position with the Company. Suresh accepts.

On the run for murder, sister and brother Maya and Alejandro Herrera flee the town of San Cristobal, Honduras. They've already covered 800 miles on their way to reach Dr. Chandra Suresh in New York, author of "Activating Evolution" and the one man who can explain the strange things happening to them.

Noah takes Claire to her first day of high school in Costa Verde, California. He asks her not to stand out in any way and to remember her last name is "Butler." As a special surprise, he gives her a Nissan Rogue as an early birthday present.

In 1671 Japan, Hiro is caught between two warring sides. Hiro stops time to freeze arrows flying toward him and realizes that one of the warriors is none other than Takezo Kensei. Seeing his hero in danger, he teleports them both to a safe location.

Matt Parkman uses his ability to ace a crime-scene simulation as part of his detective exams. He passes with flying colors and becomes a detective for the NYPD. When Matt arrives late to pick Molly up at school, her teacher shows him disturbing images she has been drawing.

Claire does her best not to stick out, which attracts the attention of West, a brooding young man who labels her as a "robot." Meanwhile, Maya and Alejandro rendezvous with a group of coyotes taking immigrants across the border. The leader has his eyes on Maya and tension is in the air.

Ando meets with Kaito Nakamura in Kirby Plaza. After years of writing him off, Kaito is finally proud of Hiro and is waiting patiently for his return. When Kaito opens the newspaper Ando brought him, a photo marked with the helix symbol falls out. Kaito announces that this means he has only 24 hours to live.

Nathan Petrelli is a mess. He's unshaved, drunk, and brooding over his vanished brother as his mom packs Peter's things away. When Nathan leaves, Angela finds a photo of herself marked just like Kaito's.

Hiro gets Kensei to safety, only to discover that it's not Kensei at all, but a man hired by the real Kensei to fight the battle for him. When Hiro meets the real Takezo Kensei, he's shocked to learn that he's a British merchant who stayed in Japan to seek his fortune as a mercenary.

Noah arrives late for work at the Copy Kingdom where his manager mercilessly harangues him with a condescending attitude. In New York, Matt asks Molly about her dreams, but she refuses to talk about them. When he presses, she snaps at him and storms off to her bedroom.

The coyotes stop the truck and demand more money unless Maya rides in front with the driver. The situation goes from bad to worse when Alejandro is left behind to watch the truck drive away into the jungle.

Debbie, the cheerleading squad captain, taunts an uncoordinated girl at the school gym. Claire sticks up for her, and Debbie challenges Claire to do a complicated back flip off a tower. Claire agrees, but remembering her father's words, changes her mind. Later, Claire leaps off the tower and breaks her leg, which quickly heals. West steps into the gym at that moment... did he see what happened?

Noah reaches his breaking point when his boss at the copy store barks obnoxious orders in the backroom. Noah snaps and threatens the boss: From now on, Noah sets his own rules.

On the Deveaux rooftop, Ando convinces Kaito to fight whoever is after him. Angela shows up to compare photos. Kaito thinks one "of us" sent them, adding that he sought redemption by helping Hiro save the world. "How did you help your son?" he asks Angela.

Hiro watches in horror as villagers flee from Otsu after bandits took everything and torched it to the ground. Kensei doesn't care. Yaeko, the swordsmith's daughter slaps Kensei for failing to protect the village as he had promised and says she will rescue her father on her own.

The "Butlers" have an awkward dinner - all of them are having a hard time adjusting to their new lives. A call from Suresh summons Noah away from the table. Over the phone, Suresh lets him know that he's now working inside for the Company and that their plan to bring them down has gotten underway.

In the jungles of Central America, Alejandro catches up with the truck and finds a terrible scene. Everyone in the truck is dead - all have a strange black oil leaking from their eyes. The only one left alive is Maya, who can't control her ability and is wracked by guilt and fear.

Needing someone to talk to, Claire calls Nathan, but he doesn't provide his daughter with the guidance she needs. Nathan looks at his reflection in the mirror and a horrifically deformed face looks back. Outside Claire's window, West hovers in the air, watching her. Before she spies him, he flies away.

Kaito waits on the rooftop for Ando to bring him a sword. Before Ando arrives, a man in a hooded shirt steps onto the deck. "Of all of them, I never expected it to be you," Kaito says. Before Kaito has a chance to prepare himself, the man pushes him off the roof to his death.

In Cork, Ireland, a band of thieves hunt a shipyard for a pallet of goods they're trying to steal. When they find the right one, they open it and discover a shocking surprise: Peter Petrelli sits inside. Wearing the helix around his neck, a confused Peter says he doesn't know who he is or how he got there.
