A young man stumbles across human remains in the middle of an Ohio cornfield. The body is covered with lime and so badly decomposed that the police can’t ID it. They search the missing persons records; a month earlier Lora Eberhard had reported her son missing. Dental x-rays confirm: the body is that of her son, 20-year-old Andrew Dotson. Lora is devastated. Who would want to hurt him so badly?
When Andrew Dotson moved with his mother and stepfather to Franklin County, OH, he still felt like the overweight, shy kid he’d been in at his old school. It didn’t matter that Andrew could be hilariously funny when he was at ease, or that he’d thinned out and found a devoted girlfriend, what Andrew craved more than anything was the acceptance he’d never had. When larger-than-life Jimmy Conway, just a few years older than Andrew, and his posse of bad boys show Andrew some attention and invite him into the circle he feels like he’s home. But soon all of those good feelings fade and the new life Andrew has made for himself starts to turn dangerous and sinister.
Authorities are putting together a picture of Andrew’s life with the Conway Gang in the months before he died and to Lora’s shock it is a patchwork quilt of petty-theft, low-level drug deals and gunfire. But when the authorities hit a brick wall in the investigation Lora gets over her shock and summons courage she never knew she had. She vows to find Andrew’s killer and bring him to justice…no matter what the cost.
