Abby meets with Anspaugh and the board. Pratt comes to her defense, and her voluntary time in detox has led the board to go easy. She'll be able to work on probation as long as she attends meetings, takes random urine tests, etc. Abby is happy to do whatever it takes, but she's not ready to come back to work yet, wanting to leave tomorrow for a few weeks in Croatia with her family. Daniels warns that she'll have to start the re-qualifying process over again upon her return.

Neela wakes up. Thinking Jaspreet is in the shower, she barges in to use the bathroom, surprised when Jaspreet walks in hung over and happy. Neela pulls the shower curtain aside to reveal Harold. At the ER, Rosemary Smalls complains she hadn't been able to sleep for weeks, because her dead husband Marty keeps waking her up. Gates orders some routine tests and a psych consult, and sends for Julia. Skye is sick with the flu, so Morris is replacing her, despite his food poisoning.

Gates finds Eddie Jacobs screaming for help. He's brought in his unconscious neighbor Sally, whose boyfriend beat her badly, breaking her arm. Pratt tells Abby that everyone thinks she's been in Croatia since Christmas. The only reason he knows the whole story is that he's her supervisor, but he thought they were friends. Why didn't Abby come to him for help? Embarrassed and ashamed, Abby admits that she's bad, but Pratt doesn't think so. Everyone has flaws, but not everyone works to fix them.

Staff is short, so Pratt agrees to allow Abby to come back to work for a few hours, as multiple victims from a building fire come in. Eleven-year-old Dexter has crush injuries, his foster sister Kayla has smoke inhalation, and firefighter Jack Gleason can't wiggle his toes. On the way to work, Harold tells Neela that he feels taller, and plans to write about his night with Jaspreet on his blog.

Julie asks Gates to come to dinner with her millionaire brother and his wife, who are hardcore Christians, critical of her lifestyle. She needs moral support, but he's not sure if he can make it. Gates takes care of Sally, who's been drinking and has an armful of tracks. Eddie's waiting to make sure she's okay, and is still wearing his hooded sweatshirt. When Gates notices blood seeping through Eddie's hood, he offers to take a look. Eddie reluctantly takes off his hood, revealing bad scars. Before being hit by a drunk driver, he was a music teacher, but now he only teaches online, afraid of scaring the kids.

Harold escorts Neela to her first day in ortho, scared that he's going to have to face Crenshaw, who hates him, on his own. The ortho doctors are practicing hockey in the hallway, and Harold is shocked when a stray puck clocks him in the forehead. Neela used to play field hockey, so Grossman insists she take a shot, impressed when she scores. Everyone's asking Abby about Luka and her trip, so she lies to keep up appearances.

Kayla and Dexter's foster mom, Yolanda shows up with her 16-year-old daughter Keisha, who calls Kayla stupid and accuses her of starting the fire by leaving the stove on. Kayla insists that she's innocent, then runs off and hits her head, falling down in the hallway. Abby finds an odd tic when she gives Kayla a vision test. Kayla has always had a problem, but kept it secret so all her foster families wouldn't hate her. Abby explains that no one hates Kayla, but grown-ups do act weird sometimes.

The vision problem explains why Kayla is so clumsy. Yolanda can't handle a kid with a disability - she's a single foster mother of five. Abby thinks Kayla has the rare disorder Leber's Congenital Amaurosis, and orders tests, as Dexter is intubated. Neela resets Sally's arm, and the ortho team admires her work. Gates tells Eddie to stick around for a tetanus shot.

Abby bumps into Sam, Neela and Gates in the hallway. When Sam asks about Croatia, Abby admits that she didn't go yet; she's leaving tomorrow, confusing everyone and firing up the gossip. Gates finds Julia having a grand time with Rosemary, who has regaled her with tales from a wonderful life. Rosemary's tests are normal, and Julia thinks her issue is grief. Gates pages psych, which still hasn't shown up for Rosemary's consult.

Dexter starts crashing on his way to get a CT scan, bleeding internally. Abby steps in, suggesting that it may be tough to diagnose a pelvic fracture instead of his liver, asking for a few minutes to try something before they rush to surgery. Acknowledging that Abby's taking a big chance, Pratt lets her do her thing, and Dexter stabilizes. Eddie wants to leave since no one showed up to give him his shot. Gates tells him that Sally will want to see him, but Eddie explains that the last time she did, she freaked out.

Pratt escorts a bunch of firemen to wait for Gleason to finish surgery. Yolanda wants to attend Dexter's surgery, so Abby volunteers to escort Kayla to her eye test. Sally finally wakes up, snaps into a tizzy, and tries to leave. Knowing that she'll risk losing her hand, Gates insists Sally get back in bed, telling her that Eddie saved her. Sally calls Eddie a freak. After a tetanus shot, Gates releases Eddie, telling him that Sally didn't comment on the rescue. Grady interrupts with news that Rosemary has died.

Abby encourages Kayla to sing during her eye test, and Kayla chooses the song "Beautiful." The firemen are happy that Gleason's surgery was successful, and Abby asks them how the fire started. Later, she tells Yolanda that Kayla's LCA will be manageable, and she didn't start the fire. Keisha apologizes to Kayla and promises not to call her stupid. Gates finally agrees to go to dinner with Julia. Sally meets Eddie in the hallway, and demands that he take off his hood so she can thank him for rescuing her.

The ortho doctors ask Neela to join their hockey team. Off to San Francisco, Jaspreet says good-bye to Neela, and asks for a favor. Abby asks Pratt if she can speak to the staff after a meeting. She admits that she wasn't in Croatia, but went to detox, because she's an alcoholic. She asks forgiveness, and hopes she hasn't damaged any relationships. Looking disgusted, Sam asks if Abby ever drank at work, but Pratt ends the meeting.

Gates is upset by Rosemary's death. Julia soothes him on the way to dinner, claiming Rosemary lived a beautiful life, and her husband was calling from the other side. Neela tells Harold and Morris that Jaspreet has left them a message: she's never coming back, and never call her again. Neela runs after Abby, who apologizes for pushing her away when she tried to help. They hug, glad that their friendship is back. Abby walks to the L train, with the strains of "Beautiful" echoing in her mind.
