The weather is unseasonably hot, and the newscast tells residents to expect rolling blackouts. On the rebound after Hope ditched him, Morris buys a sexy green smart car. Neela reminds him that he promised Harold driving lessons. Harold climbs into the driver's seat and takes off like a shot. Morris runs down the street after them, failing to notice someone opening a car door, which he slams into.

Young parents bring their three-month old baby into the ER. She's been fussy for hours, and though it's probably the heat, Abby takes the case. EMTs bring combative Morris back to the ER, strapped to a body board. The team wants to x-ray him, but he refuses treatment, and refuses to sign a release form, then walks into another door. Julia delivers on her promise to Gates to brighten up the ER, bringing in two overly cheery musicians.

Harold returns Morris' car with a slight ding, but he doesn't have time to check it out, because he's nervous about the board results, which are coming in today. The AC at a local nursing home has broken down, and several of its residents have come in with hypothermia, including unconscious J.J. Perkins and his surly roommate Bartholomew, who doesn't believe in doctors. The musicians are getting on everyone's nerves, including the baby, who can't be soothed.

Abby rips Grady a new one for his boring presentation style. Moretti interjects, sending Grady to the break room to present. Frank presents Morris and Pratt with their board test results. They've both passed, and a celebration at the local bar is set up for later that evening.

Neela and Harold attend Dubenko. A patient has an inflamed appendix, which they will remove laparoscopically. Harold interjects, claiming Dubenko is jumping the gun with his diagnosis. When Harold won't shut up, disturbing the patient, Neela sends him away. Dubenko wants to discuss Harold later, because if he does now, he'll say something cruel about their resident Dr. Rainman. Gates asks Julia to fire the volunteer musicians.

Moretti wants to know which residents are overriding his standing orders. Abby claims it must have been Pratt. Perkins remains unresponsive, so Morris asks Bartholomew to help him identify any new medication he might have received at the nursing home. The young parents claim their baby usually sweats when she feeds. Pratt wants to release them, but knowing that colic doesn't start until six weeks, and the baby has been fussy since birth, Abby holds them for more tests.

Sexy Energy Manager Ethan shows up to check the AC, and takes a shine to Sam. Abby leaves early. Moretti tells her that Grady presented perfectly, and asks why she is canceling his pre-emptive orders. He thinks his system is working, but Abby says it's not working for her. She didn't go to med school to push paper. She admits that she doesn't like Moretti, and he tells her to do whatever the hell she wants.

Despite the blackouts, the local bar is determined to stay open. Pratt is still on duty, so he's not drinking, and refuses to make a toast until Morris arrives. Harold asks Neela if Morris is mad at him for scratching his car, but she says Dubenko's the one that's mad. She admits that Harold's a little rough around the edges, and asks Dubenko for time to fix him. Dubenko's doubtful, claiming that Neela will have to make Harold a man first. He gives Neela a month, as Harold is joyfully kicked out of the bar.

Gates flirts with Julia over a game of pool, asking about her tattoos. The girls tease Sam when hunky Ethan arrives - what happened to her hot cop? Sam explains that she missed playing the field because of her kid and now's her chance. Abby shows up drunk with a bag of party hats. She sits next to Moretti, and tells him to stop flirting with her, which he denies. Pratt takes Abby outside to yell at her for not discharging the baby. She offers to go fix it, but he tells her to take a cab and go home.

The ER crew is paying up and moving on to another club, but Abby prefers to stay and have a drink with Moretti. He asks about Luka, commiserating that it's hard to balance a complicated life. Abby claims that if he knew how complicated her life was, he'd cry. The lights flicker off, and the bartender offers to pay for the next round.

Abby wakes up in unfamiliar surroundings, finally realizing when the lights pop back on, that she's naked in Moretti's bed. Knowing that Abby's not quite right, Moretti asks her to stay, but she pulls on her boots and runs for it. Pratt returns to the ER, only to find the baby in mid-heart attack. Abby was right. Abby returns home to find her babysitter on the phone with police. Abby pays her off, and yells at her to get out.

Abby loads bawling Joe into the car and drives dangerously to the airport, where she demands the next open ticket to Croatia, she doesn't care where. There's no flights because of the blackout, and the ticket agent benches an overwrought Abby, threatening to call security. Abby and Joe sit in the airport and cry, as she flashes back to having sex with Moretti.

Although he normally doesn't trust anyone with a degree, Bartholomew thanks Morris for helping Perkins. Morris confesses to Pratt that he failed his boards. He was ashamed to tell everyone, and wants Pratt to keep his secret, especially from Abby, because he feels like he let her down.
