When the CSIs are called to the scene of a fiery car crash, they identify the dead driver as reporter John Merchiston (last seen in episode 1401). Morgan works with CSI Sean Yeager to analyze the surveillance footage which shows John had an exchange with a mystery woman before the crash. John's lawyer, Jill McDermott, reveals he was working on an investigative piece about "Project Jericho", a domestic intelligence gathering operation headed by Air Force General Robert Lansdale. Russell is shocked when John turns up alive and explains that his assistant was behind the wheel of the car. "Suvari", his inside man with access to "Project Jericho", had the mystery woman give him a flash drive containing intel regarding the operation. He asks Russell for the CSI's help in decrypting the files, but Russell is thrown for a loop when they link John's fingerprint to the dead body of the mystery woman.General Lansdale and the FBI interrogate Russell, believing he and Finlay harbored John. Nick discovers that someone had planted John's fingerprint at the crime scene and sets out to prove he was set up. Meanwhile, Hodges decrypts the files on the flash drive to learn that Project Jericho involved developing software to take over a car remotely, a tactic known as "Boston Brakes". As Nick and Jill are in her car following a lead to meet with Suvari, Jill's car is taken over, but Suvari manages override the hack and give them another flash drive containing information that confirms Lansdale is behind the murder of a former Department of Defense employee accused of having an affair with him. The CSI's identiy Suvari as a former Army intelligence officer working on Project Jericho and clear John's name after apprehending Lansdale for using national security to cover up his affair.
