While putting away laundry, Maxine discovers Jerrod keeps a gun (named Petey) in his sock drawer. Maxine's livid - how could he not tell her there was a murderous device in their home?! She is strictly anti-gun and feels very uncomfortable with one in the apartment, but Jerrod refuses to get rid of it. His dad got it for him when he turned 18, so Maxine takes the gun to return it to Joe.

At the Carmichael home, Maxine confronts Joe about his inappropriate birthday gift, and Cynthia is furious to learn that Joe has given both her sons guns. Joe and Jerrod argue that it's better to have a gun than to be unprotected, though Bobby admits he was scared of his and just dropped it off in the park. The family gets into a gun control debate, which mostly ends up being a discussion on the best way to kill someone and how much Joe loves Matt Damon movies. As it turns out, Joe has a gun, too, which, much to Cynthia's surprise, he hides behind a painting of Jesus in the living room. The women refuse to live in homes with firearms, so Jerrod, Joe and their guns head back to Jerrod's apartment, while Cynthia invites Maxine to stay at the family home.

Of course, within minutes of Joe and Jerrod living together, they get in a fight about sleeping arrangements, and Joe accuses Jerrod of using his gun to intimidate him. Soon they realize the guns have gone to their heads and made them feel too empowered and apologize - only when Jerrod goes to put away his gun, it knocks into Joe's, which goes off... shooting Joe in the foot! To avoid Cynthia and Maxine's wrath, the guys decide to concoct a story that they went bowling and Joe stubbed his toe.

Meanwhile, Cynthia explains to Maxine that she needs to stand her ground and not give in to Jerrod, otherwise it sets a bad precedent for future fights. Just then, they hear a noise downstairs and fear they're being robbed, but when they go to investigate, they run into Joe and Jerrod. Joe takes out his gun and heads to the kitchen to find - and shoot - the intruder. It turns out the intruder is just Nekeisha, who is not happy Joe took a shot at her. Joe doesn't understand how the gun didn't go off, but Jerrod explains he emptied the bullets after he shot Joe in the foot. So much for keeping the secret from Cynthia and Maxine...

As Cynthia helps Joe hobble upstairs, Maxine revels in being right and convincing Jerrod to give up his gun.
