Because of his height, people always think that Eddie is a good basketball player. He's ashamed that it's not true and has kept his lack of skill hidden from Joy over the years.
Eddie is forced into the spotlight when a vice-principal from a rival high school starts a basketball league. The vice principal is extremely obnoxious and Joy offers up Eddie as someone who can put the guy in his place on the court.
Jeff coaches the team with vigor but he's disappointed when Eddie injures his hamstring. However, it turns out that Eddie is faking being hurt. He eventually confides in Steph who offers to help him out with a few fundamental basketball skills.
Later, Eddie finally admits to Joy that he isn't the player she thought he was. Joy responds in a compassionate way which inspires Eddie to play in the big game even though he'll likely make a fool out of himself.
Joy at first stands by her man, but when she sees how truly bad Eddie is she ends his misery (and the game) by pulling the school's fire alarm.
