MTV on 'Buckwild' Cancellation: It's Not Appropriate to Continue Without Shain Gandee

MTV has officially announced "" cancellation. On Wednesday, April 10, the network said in a statement, "After careful consideration, MTV will not be moving forward with season two of 'Buckwild' in West Virginia." It explained, "We love the cast and the show and this was not an easy decision, but given Shain [Gandee]'s tragic passing and essential presence on the show, we felt it was not appropriate to continue without him."

Planning "a meaningful way to pay tribute to his memory on our air and privately," MTV will air a special, "Buckwild: WV to the NYC", dedicated to Shain on Sunday, April 13 at 8 P.M. ET/PT. Before the tribute special, the network will air the entire first season of "Buckwild".

Meanwhile, MTV's decision to axe the reality series has left producer J.P. Williams fuming. "This is the network that has shows about teen pregnancy. They'll stick by a show that allows you to abandon a child, but a kid dies by accident doing what he does for a living [mudding] and they cancel the show?" he told The Hollywood Reporter. "There's something that smells of s*** here on every level."

"" executive producer John Stevens has spoken up in defense of the show after it was criticized by West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin III. To Entertainment Weekly, he claims that the program depicts the youths in West Virginia in a very positive way and that viewers will "watch the show and wish they could be them."

"It's not like looking at a train wreck," Stevens insists. "That's not what it is. That's the part I'm really excited about. There is a certain coolness to it. It's different than a lot of the stuff that has been produced. I think it's going to get people talking and it might change people's perspectives. These kids are totally wild and carefree. It will be very refreshing to the MTV audience."
