Tom Petty Invites Fans to Radio Broadcast and Recalls His Hard-up Days

Tom Petty

Rocker Tom Petty staged a special live version of his satellite radio show for fans on Thursday when he chatted and played his favourite music in a Hollywood studio.

The singer/songwriter, Tom Petty returned to EastWest Studios, where he and his band Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers recorded "The Last DJ" in 2002, for the special broadcast of his Sirius XM show, "Tom Petty's Buried Treasure."
Chatting with the lucky fans invited to sit in, Petty told them there was a time when he couldn't afford to buy the records he heard on the radio when he was a kid, according to RollingStone.com, and recycled bottles to come up with the cash.

He explained, "I play a lot of that stuff because I'm so emotionally attached to it. It was a great time for music, and I'm lucky I was born when I was born, I guess."

And Petty recalled taking on a grave-digging job just to get extra cash to buy more vinyl.

He added, "I tried a couple of jobs. I took a grave-digging job because you didn't have to look too sharp. I got my foot caught in the lawnmower on my first day."
