British singer Florence Welch was nursing a tragic secret as she sang at the Academy Awards on Sunday, February 27 - her father was seriously injured in a bicycle smash just days before the glamorous event.
The star took to the stage with A.R. Rahman to perform "If I Rise", which was tipped for a Best Song Oscar but lost out to Randy Newman's "Toy Story 3" tune "We Belong Together". However, Florence's trip to Los Angeles was fleeting - she reportedly headed straight back to Britain to be at her father Nick's hospital bedside after he cracked his spine and skull in a bike accident last week.
Nick Welch was due to undergo surgery on Monday, February 28, and told London's Evening Standard, "I'm not feeling too bad but I've been lucky. I don't know where I was when it happened."
