Nickelodeon Bosses Respond to 'iCarly' Smoking-Related Shirt

'The shirt was randomly selected from a national department store by a customer, and we had no idea what the design represented,' they said in a defensive statement.

Nickelodeon bosses have distanced themselves from controversy after a character on teen show "iCarly" wore a smoking-related shirt, insisting they had "no idea" what the design represented. Bambu Apparel spokesperson Sarah Saiger was stunned when she spotted actor Jerry Trainor in a shirt from the clothing brand, which also produces cigarette rolling papers.

Saiger tells the New York Post's Page Six gossip column, "It was unbelievable to me that they (Nickelodeon) didn't do any due diligence (sic). I always made sure not to put advertisements for my clothes near kids. I don't want kids buying my shirts. My nieces and nephews are not allowed to wear the clothing. They can look at the artwork, but they do not wear the clothing."

Bosses at the children's network insist the costume choice was not deliberate. A representative tells Page Six, "The shirt was randomly selected from a national department store by a customer, and we had no idea what the design represented."

I have 3 kids of varying ages who watch icarly all the time, and I watch it too. As a parent, i can honestly say that the only time the kids have ever paid attention to what Spencer is wearing, it's his light-up socks or spoon hat, which were made for the show. If one of the kids on the show were wearing the 'offensive' shirt, it might be a different story, but otherwise, people are just making a big deal out of nothing again.

I think the shirt does not promote smoking in any way. I've seen many celebrities in this shirt any many others from the Bambu apparel line. They are amazing shirts and I myself own 3. They are fashionable and what is new right now. I commend Nick for being so HIP. My children watch iCarly on a regular basis, and had no clue that Specer was wearing a Bambu shirt, because there was nothing inappropriate about it.

Hello from Spain. Im glad to watch this show sometimes, Im not a teenager, but I apreciate the imagination and good work actors, actresses and producer ae done here. Im sad to know tobacco companies are inside something like that. I hope big tobacco quit to press tvseries and movies. Thousand of teenagers and youngers start to smoke in several countries around the world each day, its terrrible. Please say hi to cast and people around this tender show and please pay attention to health issues. Do for your own children. Thanks!! Teresa
